1. transmediale Awards

Der transmediale Award 2008 wird erstmals gemeinsam mit dem club 
transmediale (CTM) ausgelobt. Der Preis ist mit insgesamt 8.000 Euro 
dotiert. 1.116 Arbeiten aus 57 Laendern wurden fuer den Wettbewerb 
eingereicht.

Die internationale Jury, bestehend aus Olga Goriunova (Moskau), Nat 
Muller (Rotterdam), Wonil Rhee (Seoul), Mihaela Vasile (Bukarest) und 
Florian Wuest (Berlin), hat elf Arbeiten fuer den Preis nominiert. Der 
transmediale Award 2008 wird am 2. Februar in einer Zeremonie verliehen.

Um der wachsenden Zahl theoretischer und kontextbildender Arbeiten bei 
der transmediale gerecht zu werden, ist der Wettbewerb in diesem Jahr um 
den Vilem Flusser Theory Award erweitert worden. In Zusammenarbeit mit 
dem neu gegruendeten Vilem Flusser Archiv an der Universitaet der 
Kuenste in Berlin, das sich dem Gesamtwerk des 1991 gestorbenen 
Medienphilosophen widmet, werden exemplarische medientheoretische oder 
konzeptuelle Werke mit diesem Preis ausgezeichnet, der mit 2.000 Euro 
dotiert ist.

Naeem Mohaiemen (bd) - Fear of a Muslim Planet: The Islamic Roots of 
Hip-Hop (2007/8)
Hip Hop und die Sichtbarkeit von muslimischen Kuenstlern zeigen einen 
Weg auf, rassistische Paradigmen umzudrehen. Wenn die Rapper auf Azaan 
oder Koran-Ayaats reimen veraendert sich die Wahrnehmung der 'fremden' 
Religion durch die Mehrheitsgesellschaft.

Haus der Kulturen der Welt

Im arabisch- und persischsprachigen Nahen Osten ist das 'lange 20. 
Jahrhundert' zweifellos ein Jahrhundert der Gewalt gewesen, von der 
Teilung Palaestinas ueber die Unabhaengigkeits- und Buergerkriege und 
autoritaere Regimes bis hin zum Ersten Golfkrieg von 1990. Seit dem 11. 
September 2001 ist jedoch der 'Krieg' zur institutionalisierten 
Wahrnehmungsform geworden sowohl fuer die 'Wirklichkeit' im Nahen Osten 
als auch fuer den westliche Blick auf die kulturellen und sozialen 
Produktionen der Region - vom 'Krieg gegen den Terror' bis hin zum Krieg 
gegen regionale 'Autokraten'. In diesem ersten Jahrzehnt des 21. 
Jahrhunderts reflektieren Kuenstler aus Iran, Irak, Libanon, Aegypten, 
Palaestina und Syrien heute den 'Krieg' und die einhergehenden 
Kriegsdiskurse in Modalitaeten, die zugleich von lokalen und globalen 
Dimensionen gepraegt sind.

1. transmediale Awards

This year for the first time, the transmediale Award 2008, is being 
considered together with club transmediale (CTM). The prize is endowed 
with a total of 8,000 euros. Out of 1,116 entries from 57 countries 11 
works were short-listed.

An international jury deliberated on the nominations, composed of Olga 
Goriunova (Moscow), Nat Muller (Rotterdam), Wonil Rhee (Seoul), Mihaela 
Vasile (Bucharest) and Florian Wuest (Berlin). The prize winners will be 
announced at the transmediale Award ceremony on February 02, 2008.

In order to reflect the growing number of theoretical and critical 
practice works submitted for the competition the festival is announcing 
the creation of the Vilem Flusser Theory Award. In collaboration with 
the recently opened Vilem Flusser Archive at the Universitaet der 
Kuenste in Berlin, dedicated to the complete works of the influential 
visionary and media philosopher, the prize, endowed with 2,000 euros, 
honours outstanding theoretical or research based practice.

In the Arab and Persian speaking Middle East, ‘the long twentieth 
century’ has undoubtedly been a century of imperial and civil violence, 
from the partition of Palestine, the struggles for independence, civil 
wars, and authoritarian forms of government to the First Gulf War of 
1990. After the events of 9/11 2001, ‘war‘ has become institutionalised 
both as the dominant ‘reality’ of the Middle East and as the major frame 
through which the West perceives the region’s social and cultural 
productions - including of course, the War on Terrorism and on regional 
‘autocracy’. In this first decade of the twenty-first century, artists 
in Iran, Iraq, Lebanon, Egypt, Palestine and Syria inscribe and reflect 
on 'war' and discourses of war in ways that are both locally and 
globally inflected. This aesthetic plays on the tensions between history 
as lived social experience, the images and machines of conquest and 
violence, and the Western gaze. It is an aesthetic that constantly and 
deliberately crosses conventional boundaries of artistic media in order 
to grasp the tragedy as well as the emancipatory potentials of the 
present situation both in and beyond the region itself, a zone that now 
stretches to the centres of European/Western capitals themselves through 
multiple experiences of exile and Diaspora.
