1. Ausstellung ‘CONSPIRE…’

Die Ausstellung zum Thema CONSPIRE..., kuratiert von Natasa Petresin 
Bachelez (u.a. ’In den Schluchten des Balkan’, Slowenischer Pavillon der 
49. Venedig Biennale), untersucht die strategische Grundidee des 
konspirativen Aktes in Anlehnung an die lateinische Herkunft des Wortes: 
conspirare heisst auch 'gemeinsam atmen' - eine leise und kosmische 
Einstimmung auf eine so anonyme wie intim strategische Zusammenarbeit. 
Die kuenstlerischen Arbeiten naehern sich mit Instruktionen, Plaenen und 
Andeutungen den Fakten unserer alltaeglichen Realitaet, erfinden neue oder
(pseudo)wissenschaftliche Methoden, mutmassen und fordern eine andere 
Art der Wahrnehmung heraus.
Thematische Ueberlegungen - wie die der konspirativen Wahrheiten, 
bioorganischer Systeme oder verdrehter Realitaeten - buendeln die 
Kunstwerke in orientierende Cluster, die auf Fragen nach den verdeckten 
Atmosphaeren und Strukturen verschwoererischer
Zustaende hinweisen. Im Folgenden werden diese Cluster und die darin 
gezeigten Arbeiten vorgestellt. Die Ausstellung, fuer die rund ein 
Drittel der Arbeiten neu zur transmediale.08 entstanden ist, wird bis 
zum 24.Februar zu sehen sein.

2. Twisted Realities

Die Beitraege hierzu verzerren unser Verstaendnis von der Realitaet, 
indem sie unsere Bezugspunkte veraendern und dadurch unsere alltaegliche 
Realitaet seltsam oder zweifelhaft erscheinen lassen. Sie arbeiten mit 
den Kategorien der scheinbaren Logik von Fakten und der Logik von 
Fiktion als zwei Extremen derselben Erfahrungswelt. Die Grenzen koennen 
verschwimmen (Janez Jansas Namensaenderung als persoenlicher Akt; Olga 
Kisselevas Einschub immaterieller Information in eine architektonische 
Konkretheit) und neue Ueberlebensstrategien aufwerfen wie die der selbst 
organisierten mobilen Buergerinitiativen in Lisa Parks’ Werk.

3. Visionary Lives, Fictionalised Selves and Fictionalising Oneself

Autofiktion als Projektion eines ‘larger-than-life’ Szenarios (Mangelos 
Autofiktionalisierung und seine visionaeren poetischen Manifeste; Ilana 
Halperins geologische Reisedokumentationen; die Visionen von Artur 
Zmijewskis Protagonistin Lisa), die Aufloesung des schmalen Grats 
tatsaechlicher und fiktionaler Urheberschaft (Hadjithomas und Joreige 
mit dem Fotografen Abdallah Farah) oder die Instrumentalisierung der 
eigenen kuenstlerischen Position durch die Schaffung einer fiktiven 
Institution (Julius Koller) sind die Themen dieses Clusters.

4. Utopian Politics and Dissonant Poetics

Massgebliche Antriebskraefte fuer die Arbeiten dieses Clusters sind zum 
einen die leisen und poetischen Revolutionen (Peljhan und Khlebnikovs 
performatives Theater der Betaetigung im Dauerbetrieb; YKON und ihr 
Glaube an kuenstlerische Mikro-Nationen, die das Recht auf einen 
legitimen Status haben; Bureau d’etudes’ Kartographie, die versteckte 
oder geheime Phaenome darstellt), zum anderen die Dissonanz als 
humorvolle Annaeherung, die problematische soziale oder politische 
Sachverhalte darstellt (Julieta Arandas Kakophonie von Nationalhymnen; 
Hassan Khans psychoanalytische Bruchstuecke von Erzaehlungen).

5. Bio-organic Systems

Auf der einen Seite steht Ursula Berlots abstrakte Darstellung 
imitierender bio-organischer Systeme, auf der anderen Seite Norimichi 
Harikawas Planetenkonstellationen: komplexe Galaxien, die sich zu einer 
mystischen Verbindung zwischen Mensch, Natur und Ewigkeit zusammentun.

6. Haunted Past - Projected Future

Eines der Motive hinter diesen Projekten ist ein poetischer und 
gegenwaertiger Revisionismus von faszinierenden historischen Ereignissen 
(Societe Realistes Agentur plant Revolutionen; Lene Berg rechnet 
persoenlich mit dem Kalten Krieg und dessen Propaganda ab). Laurent 
Montarons poetische Erinnerung an die Zeppelin-Katastrophe erforscht, 
welcher Nutzen von komplexen technologischen und infrastrukturellen 
Erfindungen uebrig bleibt.

7. Alternative Science/Science vs Fiction

Die Grenzen der kuenstlerischen Kompetenz, innerhalb derer man sich mit 
wissenschaftlicher Fiktion beschaeftigt, erforscht Tobias Putrihs 
Skulptur, inspiriert von Buckminster Fullers Theorie. Die Dokumentation 
von individuellen, alternativen wissenschaftlichen Ansaetzen 
thematisiert Alban Hajdinajs amateurhafter Erfinder, die kollektiven 
Ansaetze zeigt Christoph Kellers Sammlung von im Internet kursierenden 
Theorien zu mysterioesen Spuren von Flugzeugen am Himmel.

8. Conspiratory Truths

Austauschen, erforschen (Trevor Paglens Katalogisierung militaerischer 
Embleme, Alice Micelis Sichtbarmachung von Tschernobyls radioaktiven 
Orten), umwandeln, kreativ falsch verwenden (Alain Declercqs und Egle 
Budvytytes technisch brilliante Doku-Fiktionen) sowohl der historischen, 
religioesen (Matt O'dells neue Weltordnungsikonographie) und 
wirtschaftlichen Fakten (Bureau d’etudes’ Studie zum Ende der 
Privatsphaere) als auch der Fakten, die von omnipraesenten 
Organisationen etabliert wurden (UBERMORGEN.COM, Paolo Cirios und 
Alessandro Ludovicos Software-Hack) - all das verbindet diese Arbeiten. 
Eines der zentralen Momente jeder Verschwoerungstheorie ist, ihren 
Wahrheitswert so plausibel wie moeglich zu machen. Deshalb arbeitet die 
Mehrheit dieser Kuenstler mit visuellen Umsetzungen als gueltige und 
schluessige Darstellung ihrer Verschwoerungsgegenstaende.

Die Ausstellung CONSPIRE...hat waehrend des Festivals (30.1-3.2.) 
taeglich von 10 bis 21Uhr geoeffnet. Nach dem Festival (5.2-24.2.) ist 
taeglich ausser Montag von 10 bis 20Uhr geöffnet. Der Eintrittspreis 
betraegt fuenf Euro, ermaessigt drei Euro.

1. Exhibition ‘CONSPIRE…’

CONSPIRE… the transmediale exhibition, curated by guest curator Natasa 
Petresin Bachelez (i.e. ‘Location Zero=Infinite: Creative Communities 
and Locative Media’, the Slovenian Pavilion at the 49. Venice Biennial), 
focuses on the strategic notion of the conspiratorial act. In poetic 
reference to the term's Latin roots, conspirare, the exhibition 
deconstructs the nature of conspiracy into a silent and cosmic act of 
'collective breathing' suggesting a sharply targeted, yet anonymous and 
intimate form of creative collaboration.
The works and projects chosen approach the perceptive borders of our 
daily lives with coded instructions, exploratory maps and speculative 
allusions which provoke alternative views about the way in which we 
understand information and that which we believe to be universal truths.
As such thematic constructs around the notions of conspiratorial truths, 
bio-organic systems and twisted realities emerge to form contextualising 
the clusters explored within the exhibition, and are briefly described.
The exhibition, featuring many new works conceived for transmediale will 
be open through February 24, 2008.

2. Twisted Realities

Warping our knowledge of reality, these contributions act as 
reality-benders, rendering our reference points that draws the sense of 
our everyday realities odd or questionable. They operate with the 
categories of the logic of facts and logic of fiction as with two 
extremes on the same line of experience and thought that can be blurred 
(Janez Jansas’ name changing as a personal act, Olga Kisseleva’s 
insertions of the immateriality of information into the architecture’s 
concreteness), or follow the self-organised civil initiatives and their 
strategies of survival (Lisa Parks).

3. Visionary Lives, Fictionalised Selves and Fictionalising Oneself

Auto-fictions with the methods of projecting oneself onto a 
larger-than-life scenario (Mangelos' self-fictionalisation and his 
visionary poetic manifestos; Ilana Halperin’s geological travel 
documentations and Artur Zmijewski’s protagonist Lisa’s visions), 
decomposing the thin line between factual and fictive authorship 
(Hadjithomas and Joreige with the photographer Abdallah Farah) or 
instrumentalisation of one’s own artistic position to create fictional 
institutions (Julius Koller).

4. Utopian Politics and Dissonant Poetics

Soft, dark ... yet poetic revolutions are the key elements lingering in 
the shadow of these works (Marko Peljhan’s and Velimir Khlebnikov's 
ongoing collaborative conceptual theatre of operations’, YKON and its 
belief in the legitimate status of artistic micro nations’, Bureau 
d’etudes’ engaged mapping of privacy), a state of being which may emerge 
as humorous dissonance expressing problematic social or political issues 
(Julieta Aranda’s sonic cacophony of national anthems; Hassan Khan’s 
psychoanalytical fragments of narratives).

Ursula Berlot’s abstract representations, mimicking bio-organic systems 
on one hand and Norimichi Harikawa’s planetary constellations on the 
other are complex projects that collude to link the mystical and 
inexplicable nature of humanity and eternity, ultimately a search for 
something as elusive as a universal truth.

6. Haunted Past - Projected Future

One of the motives behind these projects lays in the poetic or 
revisionist intrigues of unsolved historical events (Societe Realiste’s 
agency for planning revolutions; Lene Berg’s personalised account of the 
Cold War and its propaganda). Whatever good remains from the fallout of 
misconceived technological and infrastructural inventions is explored by 
Laurent Montaron with his poetic reminder of the Zeppelin catastrophe.

Explorations into the limits of artistic competence in dealing with 
scientific fictions (Tobias Putrih’s sculptural proposal, inspired by 
Buckminster Fuller’s theories), documenting personal and alternative 
scientific proposals (Alban Hajdinaj's focus on an Albanian amateur 
geophysicist) against collective ones (Christoph Keller’s assemblage of 
Internet-based theories on the mysterious forms of aircraft chemtrails).

8. Conspiratory Truths

Researching, unveiling and transposing (Trevor Paglen’s revelation of 
non-existant military practice, Alice Miceli’s research into Chernobyl’s 
caesium induced afterglow), converting and strategically misusing (Alain 
Declercq’s and Egle Budvytyte’s technically brilliant docu-fictions) 
either historical, religious (Matt O’dell’s new world iconography) or 
corporate processes (Bureau d’etudes’ study on the loss of privacy; 
UBERMORGEN.COM, Paolo Cirio and Alessandro Ludovico’s software jamming) 
link these works. As one of the central preoccupations of any successful 
conspiracy theory, the rendering of truth as a distinct plausibility 
leads us into a gray world of suspicion and insecurity.

9. Opening Hours, Admission

The exhibition CONSPIRE….stays open daily during the festival (30.1. – 
3.2.) from 10 through 21 hrs. After the festival opening hours are 10 
through 20 hrs, daily except Mondays. The admission is five euros, 
reduced three euros.
