1. Film- und Videoprogramm

Das Film- und Videoprogramm der transmediale.07 umfasst eine Reihe von
Programmen, die sich in einer thematischen Bandbreite dem Motto des
diesjaehrigen Festivals naehern. Dies geschieht in dokumentarischen Werken mit
Spielfilmlaenge und einer Reihe von Kompilationsprogrammen, bestehend
aus kuerzeren kuenstlerischen Videoarbeiten. Das Programm eroeffnet am Mittwoch,
den 31. Januar, mit der ersten Edition der Infermental-Reihe und schliesst am
Sonntag, den 4. Februar, mit der jaehrlichen Auswahl.

Erstmals wird das Film- und Videoprogramm der transmediale.07 auch im babylon
berlin:mitte zu sehen sein. Das babylon zaehlt zu den aeltesten noch aktiven
Kinos in Berlin. Im Jahr 1929 als 'Urauffuehrungskino' der Stummfilmzeit
eroeffnet, entwickelte sich das Kino zu einem Zentrum der Kultur- und
Filmszene. Ein Ausschnitt aus dem Programm wird in der transmediale lounge an
Monitorstationen praesentiert, die anderen Screening-Termine beziehen sich auf
die Veranstaltungen in der Akademie der Kuenste am Hanseatenweg.

Das Preview der transmediale.07 video selection wird wieder als letzte
Veranstaltung des Festivals zu sehen sein (Sonntag, 4. Februar, 20 h, Studio).
Dieses Programm besteht aus Videoarbeiten der Wettbewerbsbeitraege des
diesjaehrigen Festivals. 'transmediale.07 video selection' ist die Auswahl, die
anschliessend im Rahmen der alljaehrlich stattfindenden Programm-Tour weltweit
zu sehen sein wird.

2. Infermental

INFERMENTAL war das erste internationale Magazin auf Videokassetten, 1980
initiiert von dem ungarischen Filmemacher Gabor Body. Zwischen 1982 und 1990
entstanden elf Editionen mit 674 Einzelwerken von mehr als 600 Kuenstlern aus
36 Laendern.
Die Grundidee von INFERMENTAL: Sammlung und Archivierung aktueller kultureller
Tendenzen auf Video
zur Zusammenschaltung von isolierten Medieninseln und bereits existierenden
Netzwerken. Bei Betrachtung der Editionen wird deutlich, dass sich diese
jeweils in der Auslegung des Konzepts, den Auswahlkriterien und den
Organisationsformen der Redakteure stark voneinander unterscheiden. So
dokumentiert jede Ausgabe nicht nur einen bestimmten Zeitraum kulturellen und
kuenstlerischen Geschehens und Schaffens, sondern vermittelt ebenso einen sehr
authentischen Einblick in die unterschiedlichen Arbeitsansaetze der jeweiligen
Redaktion, deren Einschaetzung von Welt, Politik und Arbeit.

Zur transmediale.07 praesentiert das Festival eine umfangreiche Uebersicht ueber
die INFERMENTAL Editionen.

Die erste Ausgabe am Mittwoch, den 31. Januar wird in voller Laenge gezeigt und
von Astrid Heibach eingefuehrt. Parallel hierzu gibt das
INFERMENTAL-Fruehstueck den Auftakt fuer die weitere Reihe der folgenden
Editionen im Programm.

Eine Reihe der Ausgaben von INFERMENTAL werden im Programm der transmediale.07
am Donnerstag, dem 1. und Freitag, dem 2. Februar von den jeweiligen Editoren
in Auszuegen praesentiert. Mit: Laszlo Beke, Gerard Couty, Heiko Daxl, Gusztav
Hamos, Astrid Heibach, Mike Hentz, Chris Hill, Rotraut Pape, Rob Perree, Lydia
Schouten, Gena Teodosievska, Christian Vanderborght

Die Editionen koennen in ihrer Gesamtlaenge ebenfalls in der temporaeren
Projektbibliothek der transmediale.07 eingesehen werden.

Antonio Ciano, Besitzer des Tabakladens am Rathausplatz von Gaeta, ist im Ort
als unbequemer Geist bekannt. Mit Leib und Seele kaempft der Ex-Kommunist fuer
die offizielle Anerkennung von Schaeden, die waehrend des Risorgimento in
Sueditalien angerichtet wurden. Im Dienst seiner Sache und als Kampfansage
gegen das Informations-Duopol von RAI und Mediaset gruendet er mit zwei
befreundeten Funkamateuren den Fernsehpiratensender TeleMonteOrlando.

FP 2: Operation Atropos, Coco Fusco, us, 2006, 59:00

Samstag, 3. Februar, 20.30 h (babylon berlin:mitte)
Im Juli 2005 nahm Coco Fusco an einem von frueheren US-Militaers geleitetem Kurs
teil. Speziell fuer Privatleute geschaffen, die deren Technik, Informationen zu
gewinnen, erlernen wollen. Sie nahm eine Gruppe von sechs Frauen mit und filmte
den Workshop. Das Training beinhaltete eine extreme Simulation, Kriegsgefangener
zu sein. Sie wurden aus dem Hinterhalt angegriffen, gefangen genommen, nackt
durchsucht, ins kalte Wasser geworfen und verschiedenen Verhoeren unterzogen.
Hinterher wurden die gegen sie verwendeten Taktiken analysiert und sie
unterwiesen, wie eben diese Taktiken gegen andere anzuwenden seien.

FP 3: 5 Fabriken - Arbeiterkontrolle in Venezuela, Dario Azzellini/ Oliver

'5 Fabriken - Arbeiterkontrolle in Venezuela' ist der zweite Film von Dario
Azzellini und Oliver Ressler ueber die politischen und sozialen Veraenderungen
in Venezuela. In dieser Arbeit konzentrieren sie sich auf die Transformationen
im produktiven Sektor Venezuelas und portraitieren fuenf Fabriken in
verschiedenen Regionen.

FP 4: Technocalyps, Frank Theys, be, 2006, 3x52:00

'Technocalyps' ist ein dreiteiliger Dokumentarfilm ueber Transhumanismus, eine
Ideologie, die annimmt, dass wir uns einem Zeitalter naehern, in welchem die
Menschheit wie wir sie kennen, nicht mehr die treibende zivilisatorische Kraft
ist. Alle technologischen Errungenschaften scheinen auf ein Ziel zuzusteuern:
Die Menschheit zu ueberwinden und zu versuchen, etwas Transhumanes zu
erschaffen.

Praesident Mitterrand besuchte 1993 Korea. Bei seinem Besuch versprach er, Korea
die 297 Baende des Oe-Kyujanggak Archivs (die koeniglichen Protokolle der Chosun
Dynastie Koreas) zurueck zu geben, die 1866 von der franzoesischen Armee geraubt
wurden und nun Bestandteil der Bibliotheque Nationale de France sind.

FP 6: Weizenbaum. Rebel at Work, Silvia Holzinger/ Peter Haas, de/at, 2006,

Ein verschmitzter Geschichtenerzaehler fuegt unzaehlige Anekdoten, Erinnerungen
und Einfaelle zum Roman seines Lebens zusammen. Joseph Weizenbaum lebt im
Nikolaiviertel, mit Blick auf das Marx-Engels-Forum und den Berliner Dom. Nach
langen Jahren in den USA ist er wieder nach Berlin zurueckgekehrt. Geboren in
Berlin, verliess der juedischstaemmige Weizenbaum 1936, zusammen mit seiner
Familie, das Land. In der Fruehzeit des Computers ging er nach Kalifornien.
Dort begann er seine wissenschaftliche Karriere und wurde spaeter Professor am
elitaeren Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Aber Weizenbaum rebellierte:
Er griff die eigenen Fachkollegen scharf an und kritisiert deren
Allmachtsphantasien, den Militarismus und die vorherrschende
Wissenschaftsglaeubigkeit.

Im Westen wie im Osten produzierte man waehrend des Kalten Krieges
Propagandafilme, um Angst und Schrecken zu verbreiteten und auf das
Schlimmstmoegliche vorzubereiten: Einen Atomangriff. Einige dieser Filme wirken
naiv und unbeholfen, andere, wie der ungarische 16mm Film ‚Helenes’, erscheinen
realitaetsnah.

Oliver Ressler, The Fittest Survive, at, 2006, 23:00
'The Fittest Survive' basiert auf dem fuenftaegigen Kurs 'Surviving Hostile
Regions' des britischen Sicherheitsunternehmens AKE Group, der im Januar 2006
in Wales stattfand. Ehemalige britische Soldaten einer Spezialeinheit
trainieren Unternehmer, Journalisten und Regierungsbeauftragte fuer einen
Auslandsaufenthalt in Krisengebieten.

Kinda Hassan, Yet Another Shot, lb, 2005, 5:03
‘Yet Another Shot’ wurde am Tag der Ermordung des libanesischen Parlamentariers
und Journalisten Jubran
Tueiny aufgenommen. Zu sehen sind Fernsehreporter, die routiniert bis
gelangweilt vom Ort der Explosion berichten.

Thomas Koener, Peripheriques, de, 2005-2006, 13:00
Drei Orte im Abseits: Menschen auf Strassen in Harar, Belgrad und einer Favela
in Buenos Aires; die Kamera sieht zerfliessende und sich wiederholende Muster
in den Bewegungen von Personen, erkennt Geschichten in transparent werdenden
Gesichtern.

Marion Pfaus/ Felicia Zeller, Der Ordner, de, 2006, 33:00
Berlin-Friedrichshain. Auf der Strasse praegen lange Zeilen leerstehender,
neueroeffnender und wieder schliessender Laeden das Bild. Die ehemalige
Existenzgruenderin Henriette W. hat ihren Laden an ihren Nachmieter Christian
S. uebergeben. Uebrig blieb der schwarze Aktenordner mit den Unterlagen eines
Existenzgruenderseminars. Das Potential des Ordners wurde sofort erkannt und
zum Drehbuch erklaert.

Juergen Bruegger/ Joerg Haassengier, Kopfende Hassloch, de, 2006, 37:00
Geradezu puppenstubenhaft restaurierte Fachwerkbauten zieren die breiten
Strassen des pfaelzischen Dorfes Hassloch. Das einzige, was an Hassloch
auffaellig zu sein scheint, ist die Unauffaelligkeit. Eines jedoch zeichnet
Hassloch vor allen anderen deutschen Staedten aus: Das ganze Dorf ist ein
Testmarkt. Seit 18 Jahren betreibt die 'Gesellschaft fuer Konsumforschung'
(GfK) in diesem als 'durchschnittlichstes Dorf Deutschlands' betitelten Ort
ihren 'Behavior-Scan', eine Verhaltensuntersuchung zur Ermittlung der
Wirksamkeit medialer Werbung.

1. Film and Video Programme

The film and video section consists of a series of programmes, relating
thematically to the motto of the festival. Works range from feature-length
documentaries, to a number of compilation programmes with short artistic video
works. The programme opens on Wednesday, January 31, with the first Infermental
special and closes on Sunday, February 4, with the annual video selection.

For the first time, the complete film and video programme will also be presented
at babylon berlin:mitte, from Thursday, February 1 to Monday, February 5. The
babylon is one of the oldest still playing cinemas in Berlin. Opened in 1929 as
a premiere cinema for silent films, the venue developed to a centre of the
culture and film scene. An excerpt of the programme is presented in the
transmediale lounge on video stations, the dates/times relate to the screening
events which take place in the Akademie der Kuenste at Hanseatenweg.

The preview of the transmediale.07 video selection will be the last event of
this year's festival (Sun 4 February, 20 h, Studio). The programme consists of
video works that come from the broad range of submissions to this year's
festival competition. 'transmediale.07 video selection' is the compilation
programme which will be presented world wide in the annual tour programme.

INFERMENTAL was the first international magazine on video tape and was initiated
in 1980 by the Hungarian filmmaker Gabor Body. Between 1982 and 1990, eleven
editions were produced with 674 single works by more than 600 artists from 36
countries.
The basic idea of INFERMENTAL was the collecting and archiving of current
cultural tendencies on video in order to connect isolated ‘media islands’ with
already existing networks. Looking at the editions it becomes clear that these
differ considerably in their interpretation of the concept, their selection
criteria and the respective form organisation of the editors. So each edition
not only documents a specific period of cultural and artistic creation, but
also allows for a very authentic look at the different approaches of the
respective editorial group and their views on the world, politics, and work.

On the occasion of transmediale.07, the festival presents an extensive overview
of the INFERMENTAL editions.
The first edition will be shown on Wednesday January 31 in full length, with an
introduction by Astrid Heibach. The INFERMENTAL breakfast will be held
simultaneously and opens the series of presentations of the following editions
within the festival's programme.

A number of the editions of INFERMENTAL will be presented in excerpts by the
individual editors on Thursday, February 1 and Friday, February 2. With: Laszlo
Beke, Gerard Couty, Heiko Daxl, Gusztav Hamos, Astrid Heibach, Mike Hentz, Chris
Hill, Rotraut Pape, Rob Perree, Lydia Schouten, Gena Teodosievska, Christian

Antonio Ciano, the owner of a tobacco shop in Gaeta's main square, holds a
reputation for his unruly attitude. The ex-communist fights for the recognition
of cruelties carried out by the Risorgimento regime in southern Italy. In his
struggle for this cause and against the establishment of the RAI and Mediaset
information duopoly, he and two friends establish the pirate TV station called
TeleMonteOrlando.

In July 2005, Coco Fusco took a course led by former US military interrogators
designed for people in the private sector who want to learn their techniques
for extracting information. She took a group of six women with her and filmed
their workshop. The video is about the collective learning experience. The
training involved an immersive simulation of being prisoners of war: they were
ambushed, captured, stripped searched, thrown in the pen and subjected to
several interrogations. Afterwards, in a classroom scenario, the tactics used
against them were analysed and they were taught to do to others what had been
done to them.

FP 3: 5 Fabriken - Arbeiterkontrolle in Venezuela, Dario Azzellini/ Oliver

'5 Fabriken - Arbeiterkontrolle in Venezuela' is the second film by Dario
Azzellini & Oliver Ressler, which deals with political and social changes in
Venezuela. In this work they focus on the transformation in the Venezuelan
industrial sector and portray five large companies in various regions.

'Technocalyps' is a three-part documentary about ‘transhumanism’, an ideology
assuming that we approach an era where humans, as we know them, are no longer
the driving force of civilisation. All technological developments seem to
converge to one main goal: to overcome humanity, to try and create something
transhuman. 'Technocalyps' is about the idea that new technological
developments will generate higher forms of intelligent life that will take over
further progress.

In 1993 President Mitterrand visited Korea. On this visit he promised that he
would restore to Korea the 297 volumes of the Oe-Kyujanggak Archives (the royal
protocols of the Chosun Dynasty in Korea), pillaged by the French army in 1866
and now part of the collections in the Bibliotheque Nationale de France. But
more than a decade after Mitterrand's promise, the books remain in the
Bibliotheque Nationale.

A hilarious story-teller adds numerous anecdotes, memories and ideas to a novel
which he calls his life. Joseph Weizenbaum lives in Berlin-Mitte with a view of
the Marx-Engels-Forum and the Berlin Cathedral. After many years in the USA, he
returned to Berlin. Born in Berlin and of Jewish origin, Weizenbaum and his
family left Germany in 1936. In the early years of the computer age, he went to
California. There he started his scientific career and later became a professor
at the elite Massachusetts Institute of Technology. But Weizenbaum was a rebel:
he began to criticise his colleagues for their fantasies of almightiness and
their devoutness to science and militarism.

The Cold War was based on fear and deterrence. In both the East and the West,
propaganda films were made to prepare audiences for the worst: a nuclear
attack. While some of these films were naive and clumsy, others were more
realistic, as can be seen in the Hungarian 16mm-film 'Helenes'.

Oliver Ressler, The Fittest Survive, at, 2006, 23:00
'The Fittest Survive' is based on filming the five-day course 'Surviving Hostile
Regions' in January 2006 in Wales, Great Britain, by the AKE Group. British
ex-special force soldiers are preparing businessmen, journalists and government
officials for a stay in regions of danger.

Kinda Hassan, Yet Another Shot, lb, 2005, 5:03
'Yet Another Shot' is a video made on the day when Jubran Tueiny, Lebanese
parliamentarian and journalist, was murdered. It shows TV journalists reporting
on the tragedy, filmed on the actual explosion site.

Three places offside: people on a street in Harar, Belgrade, and a favela in
Buenos Aires. The camera shows fluid and recurrent patterns in the moves of
people and detects stories in people's faces as they become transparent.

her business-founding course is left. Its potential was discovered and it was
adopted as a film script.

Timbered buildings, just restored like a doll’s house, decorate the wide streets
of Hassloch, a village in the Rhein region. The only thing that seems worth
noticing is its inconspicuousness. One thing, however, which does distinguish
Hassloch from all other German townsis that the whole village is a testing
ground. For 18 years the ‘GFK’ (society for consumer research) has been running
its ‘behaviour-scan’ in this village, named 'the most average village in
Germany'. The ‘behaviour-scan’ is behavioural research that is conducted for
enquiring the effectiveness of advertising in media.
