1. William Forsythe Company in Berlin (2.-4. Feb.)

Die zweite internationale Tanz- und Theatersaison der Berliner Festspiele zeigt
zwoelf Produktionen aus acht europaeischen Laendern sowie aus Japan, darunter
zahlreiche Urauffuehrungen und Koproduktionen. 'Three Atmospheric Studies', das
erste Stueck der neu gegruendeten Forsythe Company, wurde bei seiner Premiere im
April 2005 in Frankfurt/Main von Publikum und Kritik begeistert aufgenommen:
'Der Forsythe Company ist etwas gelungen, was viele anstreben, aber nur wenige
erreichen: eine aktuelle Buehnensprache zu finden, die genau den richtigen Ton
trifft. Die gleichermassen irritiert, amuesiert und erschuettert, die unseren
heutigen abgeklaerten Zynismus vorfuehrt und den ebenso uebergriffigen wie
hilflosen Logos der Macher, die uns zum Lachen bringt und Empfindungsraeume

2. Berlinale & Berlinale Talent Campus

Das Programm der Berlinale zeigt im kommenden Jahr rund 350 Filme und die ersten
Wettbewerbsbeitraege stehen inzwischen fest. Bisher werden zwei Weltpremieren
deutscher Regisseure um die Baeren wettstreiten: Oskar Roehler stellt seine
Adaption von Michel Houellebecqs Erfolgsroman 'Elementarteilchen' vor.
Hans-Christian Schmid verdichtet in 'Requiem' die Geschichte einer
Teufelsaustreibung in der Bundesrepublik der siebziger Jahre. Die bosnische
Regisseurin Jasmila Zbanic schildert in ihrem Spielfilmdebuet 'Grbavica' das
Schicksal eines Vergewaltigungsopfers in den Nachwirren des Balkankriegs.
Australien schickt 'Candy' von Neil Armfield als Weltpremiere ins Rennen um die
Goldenen und Silbernen Bären. Heath Ledger und Abbie Cornish sind ein junges
Paar, das den Drogen verfällt. Eine ungewoehnliche Liebesgeschichte
praesentiert die britisch-kanadische Co-Produktikon Snow Cake. Regisseur Marc
Evans erzaehlt von der Freundschaft zwischen einem Mann und einer autistischen
Frau. In dem Psychothriller 'Invisible Waves' zeichnet der thailaendische
Regisseur Ratanaruang Pen-ek das Portraet eines Auftragskillers. Die Auswahl
fuer den Wettbewerb der 56. Internationalen Filmfestspiele wird Mitte Januar
2006 abgeschlossen. Im Wettbewerbsprogramm werden - inklusive der Beitraege
ausser Konkurrenz - insgesamt 26 Filme praesentiert.
Der Berlinale Talent Campus findet parallel zur Berlinale im Haus der Kulturen
der Welt statt. Er funktioniert als eine Art Akademie, die junge Talente in
konzentrierter Form fordern und fördern soll. Vor allem geht es um die
Vermittlung von Know-How, um Kompetenz, Kreativität, Teamwork, Respekt vor der
Arbeit anderer und Neugier auf deren Ideen. Kreative aus allen Bereichen der
Filmwelt stellen sich als Redner, Lehrer und Diskussionspartner zur Verfügung.

3. SPOTS

24.11.2005 - 26.02.2006

Die verglaste Fassade eines Hochhauses, sonst stumme Kulisse fuer das
geschaeftige Berliner Grossstadtleben, wird zum schauenden Objekt und macht den
Potsdamer Platz zur Open-Air-Galerie. Bis zum 26. Februar 2006 zeigt SPOTS, eine
der weltweit groessten Licht- und Medieninstallationen, die Ausstellung 'Die
Stadt hat
Augen'. Die Ausstellung praesentiert Arbeiten international bedeutender
Kuenstler, darunter Werke von Rafael Lozano-Hemmer und Jim Campbell sowie
Carsten Nicolai, der sein Projekt 'Sensor' im Februar zeigen wird. Den Anfang
macht die Arbeit 'Skala' des Kunst- und Architekturbueros realities:united.
Kuratiert wird die Ausstellung von Dr.Andreas Broeckmann, kuenstlerischer
Leiter der transmediale.

4. pong.mythos, Stuttgart

Pong ist der Gruendungsmythos der Computerspieleindustrie. Wie kein anderes
Spiel steht Pong fuer den Beginn der mittlerweile ueber drei Jahrzehnte langen
Geschichte der kommerziellen Computerspieleentwicklung. Das Aufkommen der
digitalen Spiele markierte auch den Beginn fuer die Digitalisierung vieler
Bereiche unseres gesellschaftlichen Lebens. Der Erfolg von Pong steht –
historisch konkret und im uebertragenen Sinne – in direktem Zusammenhang mit
der Entwicklung unserer digitalen Informationsgesellschaft. Die Ausstellung
zeigt unter anderem die Installation 'Pongmechanik' von Niklas Roy, die auf der
transmediale.05 fuer den transmediale award nominiert wurde.

5. Lichtkunst aus Kunstlicht, Karlsruhe

Die Welt des Sichtbaren und des Sehens ist bekanntlich die Welt des Lichts. Die
Kunst als Feld des Sichtbaren ist - wie die Malerei zeigt - schon immer an das
Universum des Lichts gebunden. Erstmalig praesentiert die spektakulaere
Ausstellung im ZKM|Museum fuer Neue Kunst die klassischen Highlights der
Lichtkunst, wobei gerade die juengste Gegenwart ueberraschende Rueckbezuege
offenbart. Fruehe Positionen bedeutender Kuenstler wie Dan Flavin, Bruce
Nauman, Keith Sonnier, James Turrell, Mario Merz, François Morellet, Ferdinand
Kriwet und Maurizio Nannucci verdeutlichen den Einsatz und die Wichtigkeit von
kuenstlichem Licht in Konzeptkunst, Op Art, Arte Povera, u.a.

Sehmaschinen, optische Theater & andere Spektakel

Die Ausstellung 'Schaulust', in der Sehmaschinen, optische Theater und andere
Spektakel aus der Sammlung des Medienhistorikers und Filmemachers Werner Nekes
zu sehen sind, präsentiert die wichtigsten Entwicklungsstationen in der
Geschichte des bewegten Bildes. Mit weit über 1000 Exponaten von der
Renaissance bis zur Gegenwart widmet sich die Ausstellung auf 1800 qm einer
faszinierenden Archäologie des bewegten Bildes.

7. Phaeno Science Centre, Wolfsburg

Am 24.11.2005 wurde in Wolfsburg Phaeno als erstes Science Center in Deutschland
für ein breites Besucherpublikum eröffnet. Die Londoner Star-Architektin Zaha
Hadid hat spektakulaeres Bauwerk geschaffen, an dem Entdeckerlust und
Faszination verbunden sind. Kern von Phaeno ist eine in Deutschland
einzigartige Experimentierlandschaft von ueber 6.000 qm, die mit 250
Experimentierstationen allen Bevoelkerungsschichten einen interaktiven,
sinnlich erfahrbaren Zugang zu einer Vielzahl von Phaenomenen eroeffnet.
Hierbei werden unterschiedliche Themenbereiche aus der Physik, Chemie,
Biologie, Geowissenschaften, Psychologie, Mathematik u.a. beruehrt.

spielzeiteuropa enters its second year, presenting eleven productions from eight
European countries, as well as from Japan. 'In 'Three Atmospheric Studies’, The
Forsythe Company creates a world that appears in cross sections and glimpses.
The dancers build a series of scenes, of conversations, which sketch into space
the interior tensions of the energetic architecture of war. The voices,
transformed and amplified, roll through the bodies, tearing the room into a
wreckage of sound. The dancers navigate backward toward a whole, flooding the

The first entries in the Competition of the 56th Berlin International Film
Festival have now been confirmed. To date two world premieres by German
directors will compete for Bears: Oskar Roehler will present his adaptation of
Michel Houellebecq’s successful novel 'The Elementary Particles'. In the German
production Requiem Hans-Christian Schmid tells a story of exorcism in the
Federal Republic of Germany in the 1970s. Bosnian director Jasmila Zbanic
depicts in 'Grbavica', her first feature film, the fate of a rape victim in the
turmoil following the war in the Balkans. Australia is entering Neil Armfield’s
Candy in the race for Golden and Silver Bears. In this world premiere, Heath
Ledger and Abbie Cornish are a young couple who become involved in drugs. An
unusual love story will be presented by a British-Canadian co-production: 'Snow
Cake'. Director Marc Evans recounts the story of a friendship between a man and
an autistic woman. In the psychological thriller 'Invisible Waves', Thai
director Ratanaruang Pen-ek portrays a contract killer. The selection for the
Competition of the 56th Berlin International Film Festival will be completed by
mid January 2006. There will be a total of 26 films including those running out
of competition.
The Berlinale Talent Campus takes place in parallel to the Berlinale at the
House of World Cultures. It works as an intensive academy which challenges and
supports young film talents. The focus is on the transfer of know-how,
competency, creativity, teamwork, respect - as well as curiosity about the
ideas of others. Creative professionals from every field of the film industry
are available as speakers, teachers and partners for discussion.

3. SPOTS Light and Media Facade, Berlin

The glass front of a high-rise building, otherwise a mute element of the Berlin
city life, is transformed into a seeing object and makes the Potsdamer Platz
change into an open-air gallery. Until February 26 SPOTS, one of the biggest
light- and media installations worldwide, is presenting the exhibition 'City
Gaze'. Made for this purpose only, SPOTS has been integrated into the glass
front of the building Potsdamer Platz 10. The exhibition presents works of
internationally renowned artists such as Rafael Lozano-Hemmer, Jim Campbell and
Carsten Nicolai, whose work will be shown in February 2006. The event started in
November with the work 'Skala' by realities:united. The curator of 'City Gaze'
is Andreas Broeckmann, artistic director of transmediale.

PONG is the founding myth of the (commercial) computer games industry. Like no
other game PONG marks the starting point of its three-decade long history.
PONG's success is related to the technological development of our digital
information society. The exhibition shows - among other works - the
installation 'Pongmechanik' by Niklas Roy, which was nominated for the
transmediale award in 2005.

5. Lichtkunst aus Kunstlicht

The visible world and the world of sight, as is well known, is the world of 
light. Art as the field of the visible - as painting shows - has always been
bound to the universe of light. For nearly a hundred years, artists have
confronted this immaterial medium in the form of light bulbs, luminous
substances and neon tubes, glowing LEDs and powerful floodlights. The ZKM
Museum for Contemporary Art's spectacular exhibition offers the first
presentation of the classical highlights of light art, and here, the most
recent contemporary art reveals surprising references to earlier works. Early
positions of prominent artists such as Dan Flavin, Bruce Nauman, Keith Sonnier,
James Turrell, Mario Merz, Francois Morellet, Ferdinand Kriwet, and Maurizio
Nannucci elucidate the use and importance of artificial light in Concept Art,
Op Art, Arte Povera, etc.

6. Collection Werner Nekes in Hamburg

Schaulust - The Desire of the Gaze

The exhibition shows vision machines, optical theatres and other spectacles from
the Werner Nekes collection. The major collection of the media historian and
film-maker presents some of the most important stages in the technical history
of cinema and moving images. Covering 1800 sqare meters and including more than
1000 exhibits from the era of the Renaissance up to the 21st century, the
exhibition offers a fascinating archaeology of the moving image.

7. Phaeno Science Centre, Wolfsburg

In November 2005, Phaeno, the first Science Center in Germany, opened ist doors
for a large public. London star architect Zaha Hadid created a spectacular
building that combines fascination with a sense of discovery. In a space of
6.000 square meters, Phaeno presents 250 scientific experiments. Thus, visitors
can experience an interactive, sensual approach to natural phenomenona. Subjects
include examples from the domains of physics, chemistry, biology, psychology and
mathematics.
