1. club_transmediale.03
Der club_transmediale ist eine experimentelle Plattform fuer neue Formen
elektronischer Musik und Medienkunst im Sound- und Clubkontext, die im
Rahmen des Medienkunstfestivals transmediale zum vierten Mal
stattfindet im neu eroeffneten Maria am Ufer. Neben der
Ausseinandersetzung mit dem Festivalthema [play global!] lenkt der
club_transmediale mit seinem Schwerpunkt [go east!] die Aufmerksamkeit auf
die neue elektronische Musik Osteuropas. Die zunehmende Konvergenz der
verschiedenen Medienformate ist seit Jahren Thema beim club_transmediale.
In neun Nachtprogrammen werden herausragende Produktionen elektronischer
Musik im Zusammenspiel und Dialog mit Video, Motion Graphics oder
bildgebenden Softwareumgebungen praesentiert. Zu Beginn jeden Abends
sprechen Vortraege, Praesentationen, Panels oder Screenings

2. [go east!] Schwerpunkt Osteuropa
Das Programm stellt Projekte aus neu enstandenen Szenen elektronischer
Musik in Osteuropa vor. Audiovisuelle Performances von einer Auswahl der
interessantesten Kuenstler im Spannungsfeld zwischen internationaler
Kompatibilitaet und der Eigenfoerderung in lokalen Netzwerken erweitern den
Blick auf unsere oestlichen Nachbarn. Insgesamt reisen ueber 25

Susanna Niedermayr (AT), Journalistin beim ORF und Initiatorin von
line_in:line_out, wird in einer Informationsveranstaltung eine Einfuehrung
in die elektronische und experimentelle Musik Osteuropas geben und die
wichtigsten Protagonisten vorstellen. Sie wird ihr neues, in Zusammenarbeit
mit Christian Scheib (AT) entstandenes Buch praesentieren, das auf der
Basis jahrelanger Recherchearbeit einen UEberblick ueber die neue
Musikpoduktion in Osteuropa erstellt. Daran anschliessend moderiert sie
eine Gespraechsrunde mit den teilnehmenden Kuenstlern.

(FEZAprojects) haben zum club_transmediale.03 unter dem Titel [music´s
power] ein Screening-Programm mit Musikvideos russischer Kuenstler
zusammengestellt.

3. Eroeffnung
Der club_transmediale.03 eroeffnet mit der Soundperformance Baunummer 1077
der hollaendischen Gruppe DAC einer akustischen Resonanz-Aufnahme des
Raumes mittels Feedbackschleifen und Koerpereinsatz.
Das anschliessende Programm [perfect timing] ist ein ganz besonderer
Leckerbissen fuer alle Freunde der gehobenen, funktionalen Bassdrum-Kultur:
Thomas Brinkmann, Thomas Fehlmann, Thomas Franzmann, Octex und
T.Raumschmiere bringen raffinierte Minimalverschiebungen im 4/4-Raster zu
Gehoer. Hierzu realisieren die Schweizer Grafik-Kuenstler Buero Destruct
zusammen mit CUE - Institute of Contemporary Urban Encounters ein visuelles
Environment, dass sich unter Verwendung von Elementen ihres Loslogos
Projekts - The Society for the Conservation of Urban Visual Heritage gegen
die aesthetische Definitionsmacht der Global Playersstemmt. Das
Loslogos-Projekt betreibt nach dem Vorbild bekannter NGOs Artenschutz im
Reich der Zeichen und sammelt die weltweite Vielfalt an skurrilen lokalen
Schriftzeichen und Logos, um sie vor der Verdraengung durch einige wenige
transnationale Markenzeichen zu bewahren.

4. Strategies & Statements
Das in Zusammenarbeit mit der taz die tageszeitung realisierte Panel
[strategies] soll ausloten, wie mit elektronischer Musik, Geraeusch- und
Klangkunst zu politischen und sozialen Themen Stellung bezogen werden kann.
Im Fokus steht dabei die Arbeit mit Tondokumenten, Field Recordings usw..
Hinterfragt wird, inwieweit das Material selbst, ohne Hilfe von Texten und
dem Image eines Musikers, signifikante Aussagen treffen kann.

Das anschliessende Programm [statements] praesentiert fuenf verschiedene
Ansaetze dazu: Die amerikanischen Audio-Aktivisten ULTRA RED (US) werden
ihre Zusammenarbeit bzw. Konfrontation mit dem Netzwerk KANAK ATTAK (DE)
fortfuehren, die sie anlaesslich der Ausstellung 'Frequenzen [HZ]' in
Frankfurt 2002 begonnen haben. Die Performance beschaeftigt sich mit Themen
rund um Migration und Selbstorganisation in politischen Netzwerken.
DOMENICO SCIAJNO (IT), zeitgenoessischer Komponist aus Italien, fuehrt sein
Stueck 'Globaliz8 FX' auf, das aus Dokumenten besteht, die rund um die
Geschehnisse des G8-Gipfels in Genua 2001 aufgenommen wurden. Fuer den
club_transmediale.03 bringt Sebastian Meissner (DE) (aka RANDOM_INC aka
RANDOM_INDUSTRIES aka AUTOPOIESES etc.) zusammen mit den beiden
israelischen Ton- und Videokuenstler ERAN SACHS (IL) und RAN SLAVIN (IL)
sein "Jerusalem" Projekt auf die Buehne. Das Experiment mit Aufnahmen
juedischer und arabischer Musik ist gleichzeitig Kommentar zur Teilung der
Stadt Jerusalem. SIGNAL TERRITORIES (SI) ist ein laufendes Projekt der
Mitglieder von Atol Project, Pact Systems und Random Logic aus Slowenien.
Das Stueck benutzt SIGINT (Signals Intelligence)-Material kombiniert mit
Auszuegen aus Satelliten-Kommunikation und Rundfunk- oder
Telekommunikations-Signalen. Mit UEberwachungs- und Analyse-Methoden werden
Monopol-Netzwerken Informationen entzogen, um sie oeffentlich zugaenglich
und gemeinsam nutzbar zu machen. BORIS HEGENBART (DE) spielt eine Reihe
dichter Klangminiaturen, aufgenommen an verschiedenen Orten der Welt, die
intime Begegnungen zwischen Mensch und Objekt dokumentieren. Er
konfrontiert diese Dokumente mit arbitraeren Computer-Klaengen und oeffnet
so einen Assoziationsraum, der vom ambivalenten Verhaeltnis zwischen
menschlicher Geste und der Struktur digitaler Prozesse angefuellt ist.

5. Spatial Sound
Die Praesentation eines neuen Soundsystems zur Echtzeit-Verortung von
Klaengen im Raum, dass auf dem Wave Field SynthesisPrinzip beruht. Eine
Zusammenarbeit der TU Delft und TU Berlin, praesentiert von den Entwicklern
MARIJE BAALMAN (NL) und FOLKMAR HEIN (DE). Das Prototyp-System der
TU-Berlin wurde speziell im Hinblick auf seine Verwendung in der
Auffuehrungspraxis elektronischer Musik entwickelt. Es ermoeglicht dem
Benutzer derzeit bis zu acht virtuelle Klangquellen im Raum zu definieren
und waehrend der Auffuehrung in Echtzeit zu bewegen.

6. Abstract Algebra
Das vielleicht abstrakteste Programm des club_transmediale:
Computergenerierte Toene und Bilder, mathematische Kompositionen, die in
die physikalischen Grundlagen des Klang- bzw. Bildmaterials eindringen.
Antoine Schmitt zeigt mit seinen code-basierten Nanoensembles autonome,
audiovisuelle Maschinen. COH aus Russland wird ein Solo-Set spielen und
unter dem Projektnamen TELCOH zusammen mit den Computerkuenstlern Gideon
Kiers und Lucas van der Velden (=Telco Systems + COH) eine
Live-Cinema-Performance auffuehren. Letztere uebernehmen als Minuszero mit
software-generierten Vektoranimationen die weitere Visualisierung des
Abends. Der Ukrainer Kotra setzt kleinste Soundpartikel zu einer Synthese
aus Konstruktivismus und Noise zusammen, die von der Kuenstlergruppe
Akuvido kongenial in Bilder uebersetzt wird. Pan Sonics nahezu
uneingeschraenkte Kontrolle ueber die physikalischen Eigenheiten des
Klangmaterials fuehrt , sofern das PA-System mitmacht, bekanntermassen zu
berauschenden Hoererlebnissen. Lazyfish aus Moskau hat seine Wurzeln im
Post-Industrial, die er mit Dub und Techno verschmelzen laesst.

7. Dis-Locate
Das Programm beginnt mit einer neuen Lecture von DAVID TOOP (GB) zum Thema
[play global!]. Danach stellen SCANNER (GB) aka Robin Rimbaud und TONNE
(GB) ihr gemeinsames Projekt Sound Polaroidsvor. TONNE praesentiert seine
interaktive Software Soundtoys, ein samplebasiertes Sequenzer-Programm, das
Audio und Video auf intuitive Art miteinander verbindet. Die Rolle von
Scanner kann man am besten als die eines trojanischen Pferdes beschreiben.
Mit seinem obsessiven Interesse fuer die Schnittstellen zwischen
menschlicher Kommunikation und modernen Kommunikationstechnologien
transformiert er unsichtbare Datenstroeme in hoerbare Raeume. Der aus
London stammende Douglas Benford aka SI-CUT.DB (GB), ist einer der
Veranstalter und Labelbetreiber von THE SPRAWL, das seit einigen Jahren der
experimentellen Musik in London ein zu Hause gibt. Als Musiker
veroeffentlichte er zwei Alben auf dem franzoesischen Label Bip Hop, die
sich zwischen Dub und Electronica definieren lassen. MENU / EXIT ist das
Projekt von Marc Wagner, dem Labelbetreiber von UNDERSCAN aus Berlin, der
u.a. Gram und Scanner veroeffentlicht.

8. Globalphonics
Das Programm fuehrt verschiedene Ansaetze kritischer, ironischer und
respektloser Soundart und audiovisueller Experimente zusammen, die mit
Collage- und Samplingtechniken, Found-Footage und Cut-Ups arbeiten kurz:
mit der kritischen und hurmorvollen Aneignung von Populaerkultur. Dabei
geht es um Themen wie Medien-Kompetenz und Widerstand gegen die
Definitionsmacht maechtiger Konzerne, um die Rolle der Werbung und um
Copyright-Fragen, um Gesetzmaessigkeiten einer mediengesaettigten
multi-nationalen Welt und um Moeglichkeiten der Selbstbehauptung innerhalb
dieser Welt.

9. International Standard
Technische Souveraenitaet paart sich hier mit konzeptionellen Ansaetzen:
Innerhalb der Grenzen des funktionalen 4/4-Schemas sorgt die Lust an
subtilen Transformationen fuer neue Klangerlebnisse. Die Projekte dieses
Abends verbindet die akademische Tradition von selbstentwickelter
Instrumente oder Software mit der auf den Dancefloors dieser Welt
gesammelten Erfahrung. So wird auch noch dem letzten Skeptiker klar, dass
es laengst einen ambitionierten internationalen Standard elektronischer
Tanzmusik abseits des grauenhaften Mainstreams gibt.

11. Partner Events
Parallel zum club_transmediale werden in der Berliner galerie wieland das
Schweizer Grafiker/Kuenstler-Kollektiv Schoenwehrs zusammen mit Juerg Lehni
ausstellen. Der von Lehni entwickelte Graffiti-Roboter Hektor wird eine

Im Podewil wird waehrend des Festivals die Ausstellung [SOUND SERVICE] mit
Klangkunst-installationen gezeigt, neben Philip Samartzis (AU) und Kim

Ultra Red (US), Random Inc. (DE) und Ralph Steinbruechel (CH) vertreten.

1. club_transmediale.03
club_transmediale is the media art festivals experimental platform for new
forms of electronic music and media art used in sound and club culture. It
now appears for the fourth time at the newly opened club Maria am Ufer.
Additionally to the festivals motto [play global!] club_transmediale.03
draws special attention to the new and emerging Eastern European electronic
music scenes with its special program [go east!]. The ever increasing
convergence of the various media formats has been of steady concern for
club_transmediale throughout the years. Outstanding electronic music
productions in combination and in dialogue with video, motion graphics or
visualising software will be shown on nine nights. At the beginning of each
night different topics related to the festival will be approached in

2. [go east!] Main Focus: Eastern Europe
The program presents projects from the newly established electronic music
scenes in eastern Europe. Audio-visual performances from most interesting
artists working in that area between international compatibility and
individual efforts within local networks, shall give us a broader

Susanna Niedermayr (AT), journalist for the Austrian Radio and Television
and founder of line_in:line_out-platform, will hold a lecture introducing
the experimental music of eastern Europe and its most important
protagonists. She will present her new book made, co-written by Christian
Scheib (AT) and based on long-term research, that gives an overview on new
music production in eastern Europe. Afterwards she will host a discussion
with the participating artists.

3. Opening
club_transmediale.03 opens with Baunummer 1077, a heavy physical sound
performance by the Dutch group DAC an sonic resonance scanning the space
with feedback loops. The ensuing program [perfect timing] is a very special
titbit for friends of brilliant motion graphics and a functional but
advanced base drum: Thomas Brinkmann, Thomas Fehlmann, Thomas Franzmann,
Octex and T.Raumschmiere are all famous for their tremendous minimal shifts
within the 4/4-scheme. Swiss Graphic designers Buero Destruct team up with
CUE - Institute of Contemporary Urban Encounters, to create a visual
environment that defies against the aesthetic hegemony of the corporate
world featuring elements of their Loslogos project - The Society for the
Conservation of Urban Visual Heritage. Taking famous NGOs as a model, the
Loslogos project engages in the protection of endangered signs and
characters and collects the world wide variety of unique logos and
characters to perpetuate them from displacement by the logos of a few
global players.

4. Strategies & Statements
The panel [strategies], realised in co-operation with German daily taz -
die tageszeitung, shall investigate how far political and social themes can
be commented through electronic music, noise and audio art. It focuses on
works consisting of sound documents, field recordings etc. To what extend

The program [statements] features four different examples: ULTRA RED (US)
continues its collaboration/confrontation with members of the network KANAK
ATTAK (DE), dealing with issues like migration, social relations and
political organisation, which started at the exhibition 'Frequenzen [HZ]'
in Frankfurt 2002. RANDOM INC. (DE) aka Sebastian Meissner and the sound
and video artists ERAN SACHS (IL) and RAN SLAVIN (IL) will stage the
Jerusalem"-project, digitally processed materials from historical sound
recordings made by Jewish and Palestinian musicians as well as field
recordings collected in and out of Jerusalem, "creating an utopian moment
in which these two music cultures can co-exist in their own environments".
SIGNAL TERRITORIES (SI) is an ongoing project by members of Project Atol,
Pact Systems and Random Logic from Slovenia. Their composition is produced
entirely with SIGINT (signals intelligence) material mixed with
telecommunications traffic by satellites, broadcast services and amateur
networks. By making the monopoly controlled data avaible to the public they
also demonstrate how it can be shared. DOMENICO SCIAJNO (IT), contemporary
composer from Italy, will perform the audio-visual piece 'Globaliz8 FX',
constructed solely from documentary material taken at the incidents around
the G8 meeting in Genova, 2001. BORIS HEGENBART (DE) plays a set of dense
sound-miniatures recorded at various places all over the world. He
documented private and intimate encounters of man and object, confronting
them with arbitrary computer-music. Thus he opens an associative
trans-cultural space which is filled with the ambiguous relation between
human gesture and the structure of processing technology.

5. Spatial Sound
Presentation of a new sound system for real time distribution of sounds
within a space based on a technique called "Wave Field Synthesis". The
research project is a co-operation between the TU Delft and the TU Berlin
and is presented by the developers MARIJE BAALMAN (NL) and FOLKMAR HEIN (DE).

6. Abstract Algebra
Probably the most abstract performance of club_transmediale.03:
Computer-generated sound and images, mathematical compositions that
penetrates deep into the physical basics of sound and image materials.
Antoine Schmitt shows autonomous, audio-visual, code generated machines
called Nanoensembles. COH from Russia will perform a solo set before
teaming up with the computer artists Gideon Kiers and Lucas van der Velden
for the live-cinema performance TELCOH (=Telco Systems + COH). In the name
of Minuszero the latter will provide additional visualisation for the rest
of the night with software-generated vector animations. Ukrainian artist
Kotras rhythms, consisting of small sound-particles, are a synthesis of
constructivism and noise, being translated into images by Akuvido. Pan
Sonic´s almost unlimited ability to control the physical structures of
sound result in hypnotic listening experiences. Lazyfish from Moscow
combines his post-industrial roots with dub and techno.

7. Dis-Locate
The program starts with a new lecture by DAVID TOOP (GB) caused by the
motto [play global!]. Afterwards SCANNER aka Robin Rimbaud (GB) and TONNE
(GB) will present their joint project Sound Polaroids. TONNE also presents
his interactive software Soundtoys, a sample based sequencer program, which
intuitively combines audio with video. Scanners role could best be
described as that of a Trojan horse: With his obsessive interest in the
interface of human communication with telecommunication technology he
transforms invisible data streams into audible spaces. Douglas Benford aka
SI-CUT.DB (GB) is the other half of The Sprawl, a record label, a club and
an important host for experimental music in the UK. As a musician he
published two albums on the French label Bip Hop, located between dub and
electronica. MENU/EXIT (DE) is a project by Marc Wagner, who runs Berlin's
Underscan label, publishing Gram, Scanner and others.

8. Globalphonics
The program combines lectures and performances of ironic sound art and
audio-visual experiments working with collage and sampling techniques, with
found footage and field recordings - in short: a critical and humorous
re-use of mass culture. The program covers issues of media-literacy,
creative and humorous anti-corporate art/activism, the role of advertising
and corporate power in our lives, intellectual property issues, and the
evolution of art, law and resistance in a media saturated multinational world.

9. International Standard
Superior technique combined with a conceptual approach: Within the
boundaries of the functional 4/4-scheme, subtle transformations lead to new
sound adventures. These projects fuse the academic tradition of self-made
instruments or software with the experiences gathered on the dancefloors
around the world. So the last sceptic shall be convinced that beyond
dreadful mainstream there is an ambitious international standard in dance
music.

10. Installations
At its venue Maria am Ufer club_transmediale.03 presents several
installations that describe pop culture as a mass product of the cultural
industry in the gap between exciting games and terrifying visions. Works by

Pruskin (GB), Birgit Ramsauer (DE), Pietro Sanguineti + Markus Schneider
(DE), Robert Pravda (NL), monitor.automatique (DE) and Jan Rohlf &
Maverick (DE).

11. Partner Events
Parallel to the events of club_transmediale, Berlins galerie wieland will
be showing the Swiss graphics/ art collective Schoenwehrs together with
Juerg Lehni. The graffiti-robot Hektor, developed by Juerg Lehni, will
produce a large scale mural work.

soundart installations by Philip Samartzis (AU), Kim Cascone (US) and
others, as well as artists appearing at club_transmediale: Ultra Red (US),

offers workshops and concerts with artists from the Polish label Polycephal
