1. Performances
Die transmediale zeigt in ihrer diesjaehrigen Ausgabe ein umfangreiches
Programm an performativen kuenstlerischen Projekten im Haus der Kulturen
der Welt (HKW) und an anderen Orten. Zentrale Orte im HKW sind die
Buehne im Cafe Global und das Foyer des Hauses mit taeglichen
Performances, und das Auditorium mit mehreren Abendveranstaltungen in
diesem Bereich. An mehreren externen Orte finden ebenfalls Performances
der transmediale.08 statt, wie etwa dem Zeiss Planetarium im Prenzlauer
Berg, dem 103 Club in Kreuzberg und dem M12 Projektraum am Alexanderplatz.

2.. AKA the castle - Moving Forest
Freitag, 1.2.2008, 11.00 – 23.00 Uhr, Ganztaegige Performance an
verschiedenen Orten im Zentrum Berlins
‚Moving Forest’ ist eine zwoelfstuendige Klangperformance in fuenf
Akten, die mit Wifi- und Mobilfunktechnologie operiert. Angelehnt an
Akira Kurosawas ‚Throne of Blood’, eine filmische
Macbeth-Interpretation, uebertraegt ‚Moving Forest’ die
finale,12-minuetige Sequenz des Films in ein gross
angelegtes,12-stuendiges Klangereignis.
‚Moving Forest’ bringt eine moderne Auflage eines im Mittelpunkt
stehenden Schlosses und einer Stadt in Aufruhr hervor - drinnen im
Schloss der Niedergang der vermeintlichen Macht, draussen die
aufgebrachten Stadtbewohner, die sich mit kuenstlich erzeugten
Geraeuschen des Aufruhrs auf die imaginaere Mitte zu bewegen. In ‚Moving
Forest’ arbeiten Klangkuenstler daran, die einzelnen Akte und Themen zu
erstellen. Gleichzeitig zeichnen sie ein Verschwoerungsschema aus ‚Pure
Data’, indem die stadtweite Performance live per Wifi uebertragen wird.

Nominiert fuer den transmediale Award 2008
‚Valve / Membrance’ ist eine Reihe elektronischer und
nicht-elektronischer Musikstuecke mit Ventilinstrumenten traditioneller
japanischer und chinesischer Herkunft. Die so entstehende Musik
ueberbrueckt geschichtliche und geographische Abstaende technologischer
und musikalischer Ausdrucksformen. Sie vereint kulturelle und
technologische Elemente des alten Asiens, der Industriellen Revolution
und des elektronischen Zeitalters.

Sonntag, 3.2.2008, 20.00 Uhr, Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Auditorium
‚hystere’ ist eine experimentelle Improvisation innerhalb festgelegter
Grenzen, in der eine E-Clambone die einzige Quelle darstellt, um eine
multimodale Klangumgebung zu erzeugen. Der visuelle Aspekt der
Performance sucht aus dem Live-Videofeed nach Momenten von Konvergenz
und Divergenz, und wird als Library von OpenGL Classes implementiert,
die auf die Open Sound Control Messages ueber das Ethernet 'hoeren'.

Die Performance ‚10.000 Peacock Feathers in Foaming Acid’ macht die
faszinierenden Oberflaechenstrukturen von Seifenblasen in ihrer ganzen
Komplexitaet mit Laser-Licht sichtbar. Dmitry Gelfand erschafft
gemeinsam mit seiner Partnerin Evelina Domnitch sinnlich immersive
Umgebungen, die Physik, Chemie und Computertechnologie zusammenfuehren.
Den auditiven Teil der Performance steuert Andrey Smirnov, der Leiter
des Moskauer Theremin Zentrums, bei.

Dienstag, 29.1.2008, 21.00 Uhr, Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Cafe Global
Das Schlagzeug Duo Itoken und Jimanica und der Videokuenstler Yamaguchi
Takashi praesentieren ihre ‚interaktive live Installation’. Die Musiker
steuern mit ihren Schlagzeugen spiele-artige Animationen, die wiederum
Toene generieren. Ihr Schlagzeugspiel ist dabei auch von der Struktur
der Animationen abhaengig. Der Auftritt bei der transmediale.08 ist die
Auftaktveranstaltung fuer die erste Europatournee von d.v.d..

'DIGIT’ ist ein lebendiger Kunstvorgang - der Schreibende sitzt am Tisch
und schreibt einen Text. Ohne sichtbares Schreibutensil erscheint der
Text beim blossen Gleiten seines Fingers ueber ein leeres Blatt Papier.
Ganz nahe kann der Besucher an den Schreiber herantreten und den
hervortretenden Text verfolgen. 'DIGIT' bewegt sich zwischen
cinematografischem Prozess und Schreibvorgang und bezieht sich auf die
surrealistische Tradition des Zerschneidens und Neuarrangierens von
Texten. 'DIGIT' erhielt eine lobende Erwaehnung beim Prix Ars
Electronica 2007.

1. Performances
This year's transmediale features an extensive programme of performance
projects occupying diverse locations at the House of World Cultures
(HKW) and other venues in Berlin. Daily events and performative moments
will be on show at the Cafe Global stage and in the Foyer as well as in
the main auditorium (all HKW). Further performances are scheduled at
several external locations including the Zeiss Planetarium in Prenzlauer
Berg, the 103 Club in Kreuzberg and the M12 project space on
Alexanderplatz completing the programme network.

2. Moving Forest - AKA the castle
Friday, 1.2.2008, 11.00 - 23.00 hrs, all day performance at HKW and
several locations in Berlin's centre
‘Moving Forest’ is a 12-hour 5 act sonic performance operating with
public wifi and mobile technology – an expandable citywide operatic
manoeuvre/intervention. Derived from Kurosawa’s film version of Macbeth,
Spider Web Castle, ‘Moving Forest’ renders the film’s final sequences
(12 minutes in length) into a 12-hour ‘sonica’ of grand scale. ‘Moving
Forest’ reinvents a modern edition of a Castle Central (here: the House
of World Cultures) and a city in revolt. Inside the castle, the downfall
of the assumed power; outside in the city, the mobilised urbanites march
with generated sounds of insurgence towards the imaginary Centre.
‘Moving Forest’ collaborates with sound artists to compose acts and
scores, at the same time, drafts a PD (pure data) conspiracy scheme,
performing live with citywide performance transmitted by wifi.

Nominee for the transmediale Award 2008
‚Valve / Membrance’ is a series of electronic and non-electronic music
pieces with traditional Japanese and Chinese valve instruments. The
music bridges historical and regional differences of technological and
musical forms. It focuses on cultural and technological elements from
ancient Asia, the industrial revolution and the electronic age.

‘hystere’ is an experiment in improvisation within premeditated
boundaries in which the ‘e-Clambone’, a custom-made electronic wind
instrument, provides the sole source for the ensuing multimodal
environment. The visual aspect seeks moments of convergence and
divergence with live video feed from the performance and is implemented
as a library of OpenGL classes that listen to Open Sound Control
messages over the ethernet.

The performance ‘10,000 Peacock Feathers in Foaming Acid’ visualises the
fascinating surface structures of soapbubbles by using laser light.
Dmitry Gelfand and his partner Evelina Domnitch create sensual immersive
environments that bring together physics, chemistry and computer
technology. The audio part of the performance is contributed by Andrey
Smirnov, the director of the Theremin-Center in Moscow.

The drums duo Itoken and Jimanica together with visual artist Yamaguchi
Takashi are presenting their ‘interactive live installation’. With their
drumsets the musicians are controlling game-like animations which are
generating additional sounds. In turn their drum-play is dependent on
the structure of the animation. The show at transmediale.08 is the
kick-off event for d.v.d’s first europe tour.

‘DIGIT’ is a living work of art – a writer sits at a table writing a
text. The printed text appears through the mere gliding of his finger
across a blank sheet of paper. Spectators can come very close to the
writer and follow the emerging text. ‘DIGIT’ is located between
cinematographic process and the process of writing, while also making
reference to the surrealist tradition of cutting and rearranging texts.
His work ‘DIGIT’ received an Honorary Mention in Ars Electronica 2007 .
