1. Film- und Videoprogramm

Das Film- und Videoprogramm der transmediale.08 umfasst neun 
Kompilationen, drei Filmprogramme und ein zweiteiliges Special. In den 
Kompilationen sind kuerzere kuenstlerische Videoarbeiten 
zusammengefasst, die fuer den Wettbewerb der transmediale.08 eingereicht 
wurden.

Das zweiteilige Special beschaeftigt sich mit widerstreitenden 
Stroemungen der 1950er Jahre: misstrauische Propaganda, atomarer 
Fatalismus, Friedenshoffnungen und Konsumrausch. Die Auswahl der 
Kurzfilme wurde von dem Filmemacher und Kurator Marcel Schwierin 
zusammengestellt.

Die Preview der transmediale.08 video selection wird wieder am letzten 
Tag des Festivals zu sehen sein (Sonntag, 3. Februar, 18.00 Uhr). Dieses 
Programm besteht aus Videoarbeiten der Wettbewerbsbeitraege des 
diesjaehrigen Festivals, das  im Rahmen der alljaehrlich stattfindenden 
Programm-Tour weltweit gezeigt werden wird.

Alle Screening-Programme finden im Theatersaal statt (Haus der Kulturen 
der Welt), der Eintritt betraegt 7 Euro, ermaessigt 5 Euro.

In 'Stranger Comes to Town' befragt Jacqueline Goss sechs anonyme 
US-Einwanderer nach ihren Erfahrungen mit den Behoerden. Jeder von ihnen 
erhaelt einen Videospiel-Avatar, der stellvertretend fuer sie spricht. 
Im Fokus steht die Befragung von Grenzbeamten bei der Einreise, die 
damit einhergehende Auseinandersetzung mit Identitaetskonstruktionen an 
Grenzorten und wie diese Prozesse sich wiederum auf den Einzelnen auswirken.

Die Dokumentation ‚Culture Jamming’ verfolgt subversive Kulturstrategien 
des 20. Jahrhunderts von den Anfaengen bei Marcel Duchamp und der 
Situationistischen Internationale bis hin zum postmodernen Info-War. 
Culture Jamming verbreitet virale Information, gefakte Medienkampagnen 
oder Websites, um die Massenmedien zu ‚jammen’. Beispielhafte 
Medienaktivisten wie das italienische Kuenstlerpaar 01.org kommen ebenso 
zu Wort wie Hans Bernhard von UBERMORGEN.COM, der vor ein paar Jahren 
mit seiner Website voteauction.com fuer Aufsehen sorgte.

CPO3: Sudden Interventions

Am zweiten April 2007 taucht ein weisser Monolith im Zentrum einer 
Pariser Strasse auf und behindert den Verkehr. Er ruft 
unterschiedlichste Reaktionen hervor - ein Grossteil der auf diese Weise 
gefangenen Fahrer reagiert jedoch mit erstaunlicher, fast religioeser 
Gelassenheit.

Staedteplaner beschliessen, Teile der Altstadt von Shanghai abzureissen, 
um das Stadtbild zu erneuern. Jedes Jahr werden mehr als 100.000 
Familien gezwungen, ihre Wohnungen zu raeumen und in Appartements am 
Rande der Stadt zu ziehen. ‚Under Construction’ von Zhenchen Liu ist ein 
2- und 3-D Flug ueber die nun zerstoerten Wohngebiete von Shanghai.

Thorsten Fleischs Arbeit 'ENERGIE!' zeigt unkontrollierten 
Elektronenausstoss, der auf Photopapier gebracht wird. Die 
Blitzentladung belichtet das Papier. Die daraus gewonnenen Photogramme 
wurden zeitlich nach visuellen Gesichtspunkten organisiert. Bei Robin 
Dupuis (Anoxi: derniere partie) werden Fluessigkeiten und Partikel 
digital animiert. Elemente verschmelzen zu neuen Formen, teilen sich, 
finden sich wieder in einem staendigen Fluss der Transformation und 
Variation.

3. Special: A Decade Called 'X’

Zum ersten Mal seit der Restaurierung des Hauses der Kulturen der Welt 
ist die transmediale wieder hier zu Gast. Die Kongresshalle, wie das 
Geschenk der USA zu seiner Eroeffnung 1957 hiess, war ein ideologisch 
hoch aufgeladenes Gebaeude, ein 'Leuchtfeuer der Freiheit' gegen den 
gerade ueberwundenen Faschismus und den noch zu ueberwindenden 
Kommunismus. Der Kurator und Filmemacher Marcel Schwierin hat ein 
Programm zusammengestellt, welches die widerstreitenden Stroemungen der 
1950er Jahre in ihren Kurzfilmen reflektiert: martialische, 
offensichtlich noch durch Kriegswochenschauen geschulte Filme treffen 
auf hysterisch froehlichen Konsumrausch, misstrauische Propaganda, 
Spione, atomaren Fatalismus, Weltraumeroberungsphantasien, 
Friedenshoffnungen und Wissenschaftsglaeubigkeit. Dazwischen steht der 
nach dem Krieg neu entstehende Avant-Garde Film, noch isoliert, tastend, 
nach neuen Ausdrucksformen gegen den ideologischen Bilderstrom suchend.

Das Bauunternehmen Robelco trat im Fruehling 2005 medial in Erscheinung, 
als es versuchte die Ravenstein Galerien in Bruessel zu 
‚revitalisieren’. Mit der Absicht, das Image der Kaufhausgalerien zu 
verbessern, luden sie mehrere Kunstgalerien ein, voruebergehend die 
leerstehenden Bueroraeumlichkeiten zu nutzen. Die im ersten Stock 
gelegenen Kunstgalerien stellten die ‚kulturelle Elite’ dar, waehrend 
die im Erdgeschoss befindlichen, unerwuenschten Cafes und Bars fuer die 
‚soziale benachteiligte’ Gesellschaftsschicht stand. Der Regisseur 
Bernard Mulliez interviewte die verschiedenen Menschen, die in das 
Projekt involviert waren.

In Zusammenarbeit mit dem Performer Rami Farah setzen sich Julia Meltzer 
und David Thorne in 'Not a Matter of If but When' mit der 
sozio-politischen Situation in Syrien auseinander. Diese Arbeit wurde 
fuer den transmediale Award 2008 nominiert.

FP03: Fuer ein Leben nach dem Tod

'Fuer ein Leben nach dem Tod' zeigt tagebuchartig die letzten 
oeffentlichen Auftritte des Papstes Johannes Paul II in Rom. Die als 
Journalisten akkreditierten Kuenstler verfolgen die offiziellen Termine 
des Heiligen Stuhls von den fuer Berichterstatter reservierten Plaetzen, 
neben CNN, BBC und France2. Der Fokus wird auf das scheinbar 
Nebensaechliche gerichtet, Journalisten, Bodyguards, Polizisten, 
Mitarbeiter der Kurie.

1. Film and Video Programme

The film and video section consists of nine compilations, three 
feature-length documentaries and a two part special programme. The 
compilation programme shows artistic video works coming from the broad 
range of submissions to this year’s festival competition.

The two-part special deals with conflicting currents of the fifties: 
mistrustful propaganda, atomic fatalism, the hope for peace or buying 
frenzy. The selection is selected by  film-maker and curator Marcel 
Schwierin.

The preview of the transmediale.08 video selection will be presented on 
the last day of the festival (Sunday, February 3, 18.00 hrs). The 
programme consists of video works that derive from the broad range of 
submissions to this year's festival competition and which later will be 
presented world wide in the annual tour programme.

All screenings take place at the theatre hall (House of World Cultures), 
the admission is 7 euros (reduced 5 Euro).

Six people are interviewed anonymously about their experiences coming 
into the U.S. Each then designs a video game avatar who tells their 
story by proxy. Goss focuses on the questions and examinations used to 
establish identity at the border, and how these processes in turn affect 
one's own sense of self and view of the world.

The documentary is the result of two years research into European 
‘Culture Jamming’, from the roots in the beginning of the 20th century, 
Marcel Duchamp or the French avant-garde group Situationist 
International, to post-modern info war. Modern Culture Jamming is 
distributing viral information like fake media campaigns to ‘jam’ the 
mass media. The film provides interviews with exemplary media activists 
like the Italian artists 01.org but also Hans Bernhard from 
UBERMORGEN.COM who a few years ago caused a stir with his website 
voteauction.com.

On the second of April 2007, a white monolith appears on the streets of 
Paris and obstructs traffic. It raises various reactions, but most 
drivers show a surprising resignation, that almost resembles a form of 
religious contemplation.

City planners decide to pull down parts of Shanghai’s old town in order 
to regenerate the city. Every year more than 100,000 families are forced 
to leave their homes and move into buildings at the edge of the city. 
‘Under Construction’ is a two and three-dimensional flight across the 
now destroyed living areas of Shanghai.

For ‘ENERGIE!’ (ENERGY!) an uncontrolled high voltage discharge of 
30,000 volts exposes photographic paper which is then arranged in time 
to create new visual systems of electron organisation.

3. Special: A Decade Called 'X’

For the first time after its renovation , transmediale is once again a 
guest at the Haus der Kulturen der Welt. The congress hall was a gift 
from the USA in 1957, it has been an ideologically charged building, a 
‘beacon of freedom’ against fascism, which at the time had just 
disappeared, and against communism which still had to be overcome. The 
curator and filmmaker Marcel Schwierin has compiled a short film 
programme which reflects on conflicting currents of the 1950s: 
martialistic films - obviously influenced by the war-reels - get 
together with a hysterically joyous consumption rush, distrustful 
propaganda, spies, atomic fatalism, conquest to outer space, hope for 
peace and science devoutness. In between situated the upcoming 
Avantgarde film after the war, still isolated, looking for new forms of 
expressions against the ideological stream of images.

In the spring of 2005, the property developer Robelco gave wide media 
coverage to a project for ‘revitalising’ the Ravenstein Galleries in 
Brussels. With the intention of ‘improving the image’ of the department 
store Galleries, they invited several art galleries to temporarily 
occupy the many empty commercial spaces. On the first floor the art 
galleries were adorned with the virtues of the ‘culturally elite’, 
whereas the ground floor; with its doomed, undesirable local cafes and 
bars, were adorned with their ‘socially disadvantaged’ customers. The 
director Bernard Mulliez interviewed the different people involved in 
this project.

'Fuer ein Leben nach dem Tod' ('For a Life after Death') shows the last 
public appearances of Pope John Paul II in Rome in form of a diary. The 
artists were accredited as journalists and attended the official events 
of the Holy See from a commentator's perspective, next to CNN, BBC and 
France2. The focus is set on what seems negligible, like journalists, 
bodyguards, policemen, staff of the Curia.
