1. Konferenz CONSPIRE....

Das Verlangen nach Konspiration scheint eine Kondition menschlichen 
Zusammenlebens zu sein, eine Art und Weise, um eine wachsende Welt 
chaotischer und manipulierter Desinformation zu entschluesseln und zu 
verstehen. Das Internet hat mit dem ‘Web 2.0’ laengst begonnen, sich 
ueber den benutzergesteuerten Informationsaustausch hinaus zu einer 
Plattform zu entwickeln, ueber die zunehmend auch alle moeglichen 
populaeren Geruechte und Spekulationen angefacht und verbreitet werden. 
Diese stehen beispielhaft fuer einen Kontrollverlust und das wachsende 
Gefuehl eines Ausgeliefertseins an vermutete versteckte Maechte und 
Geheimbuende, aus dem heraus Mythen von Weltherrschaft, 
gesellschaftlicher Ueberwachung und eine auch von staatlicher Seite aus 
befoerderte Kultur der Angst entstehen. Mit diesem Themenspektrum 
beschaeftigt sich die Konferenz der transmediale.08.

Alle Keynotes und Panels der Konferenz finden im Haus der Kulturen der 
Welt statt (Auditorium). Die Konferenz der transmediale.08 findet durch 
die Unterstuetzung und in Zusammenarbeit mit der Bundeszentrale fuer 
politische Bildung statt.

The 'Real' Conspiracy

Vom 'Realen' zur Simulation, von der Simulation zur Virtualisierung - 
die Assimilation der Wirklichkeit ist haeufiges Thema in gegenwaertigen 
Debatten ueber Bilder und Verstaendlichkeit. Dies gruendet auf der 
These, das es etwas Gleichbleibendes, Beschreibbares, 'Reales' gibt, dem 
eine objektive Aehnlichkeit mit der Welt inne wohnt. Diese Fiktion des 
'Realen', stark erschuettert durch Psychoanalysten, Quantenphysiker, 
Semiotiker, Kybernetiker und zunehmend auch durch Computerberechnungen 
ist letztlich eine unverzichtbare Konspiration. Der Vortrag untersucht 
verschiedene Realitaetsvorstellungen als tragisches Herzstueck einer 
Kultur, die von einer hoffnungslosen Illusion berauscht ist.
Druckrey ist freier Kurator und Autor. Er hat an Graduiertenprogrammen 
am International Center of Photography, der School of Visual Arts und am 
Center of Creative Imaging in NY unterrichtet. International haelt er 
Vortraege ueber den sozialen Einfluss von elektronischen Medien, die 
Transformation der Repraesentation und ueber Kommunikation in 
interaktiven und Netzwerkumgebungen.

Das Paradoxon des Knalls: Die Abnahme der Angst durch die Erhoehung der 
Gefahr

Schwarze Loecher sind in ihrer ambivalenten Existenz zwischen 
physikalischem Paradox und mythischem Tiefenraum ein Thema mit 
ungebrochen grosser Faszination, das zu verschiedensten Spekulationen 
einlaedt. Prof. Dr. Otto E. Rossler wird anlaesslich eines der groessten 
Experimente in der Geschichte der Menschheit - die Erzeugung kleiner 
Schwarzer Loecher in den Tiefen des 'Large Hadron Colliders' in Genf - 
ueber Spekulation, Theorie und Evidenz der wissenschaftlichen 
Theoriebildung sprechen. Ein solches Experiment wird im Mai 2008 
stattfinden. Es kostet fast 10 Milliarden Euro und wurde von 97 Prozent 
der Teilnehmer einer internationalen BBC-Umfrage abgelehnt. Dies 
befoerdert nicht nur die Euphorie einer technologisch-wissenschaftlichen 
Potenz, sondern provoziert vor allem die Frage, was mit einem solchen 
Schwarzen Loch zu tun sei? Das Spiel mit der diffusen Angst ist dabei 
immer auch Teil des wissenschaftlichen Diskurses.
Otto E. Rossler, geboren 1940 in Berlin, arbeitet am Institut fuer 
physikalische und theoretische Chemie der Universitaet Tuebingen. Der 
Biochemiker studierte zunaechst Medizin und forschte am 
Max-Planck-Institut fuer Verhaltensphysiologie bei Konrad Lorenz. Seine 
zahlreichen Veroeffentlichungen umfassen die theoretische Biologie, 
theoretische Physik, Mathematik, die Philosophie der Naturwissenschaften 
sowie Verfahrenstechnik. Rossler ist einer der Pioniere der Chaosforschung.

Keynote Event: Circulo Reflexivo
Collaboration or Obedience: Co(i)nspiration as the Biological Basic for 
Human Existence

Dem kollaborativen Gespraech zwischen Maturana und Davila liegt die 
Vorstellung zugrunde, dass der Mensch in seinem Ursprung ein 
biologisch-kulturelles Konstrukt ist. Anhand von Kategorien wie Sprache 
als System und Konversation als prozessualer und performativer Akt 
skizzieren sie den kulturellen Rahmen fuer die unterschiedlichen Welt- 
und Realitaetsentwuerfe, die wir leben. Ein Circulo Reflexivo ist ein 
durch die Teilnehmenden konstituierter Raum des gemeinsamen 
Reflektierens, der kollektiven Rezeption und des Dialogs - in diesem 
Fall handelt es sich um den gemeinschaftlichen Gedankenaustausch 
(Ko-Inspiration) und Kollaboration im Sinne eines konzeptuellen 
biologischen Phaenomens. Formgebend fuer solch reflexive Zirkel sind 
persoenliche Gedanken ueber den Sinn unseres Daseins, mit Fragen wie: 
Wie verstehen Sie sich selbst in Ihrer Funktion als Wettkaempfer? Wie 
begreifen Sie sich als Kollaborateur? Und wie sehen Sie sich als 
Ko-Inspirator?
Humberto Romesin Maturana, geboren 1928 in Santiago de Chile, ist 
Biologe mit dem Schwerpunkt Neurobiologie und Philosoph. Zusammen mit 
Francisco J. Varela gilt Maturana als einer der Begruender des radikalen 
Konstruktivismus und als Erfinder des Konzepts der Autopoiesis. Maturana 
lebt in seiner Geburtsstadt Santiago de Chile und leitet dort zusammen 
mit Prof. Davila das Instituto Matriztico. Seine gedruckten Werke zeugen 
von seiner interdisziplinaeren Arbeit zwischen Biologie, Philosophie, 
Psychologie und Soziologie.

Performativer Vortrag: Einar Thorsteinn (is): Alchemy Of Objects

Einar Thorsteinn hat waehrend seiner langjaehrigen Arbeit als Kuenstler 
und experimenteller Architekt Hunderte von verschiedensten Raummodelle 
und mathematische Skulpturen erdacht und angefertigt. Dieser 
unermuedlichen Produktionsprozess und dessen Antriebskraefte sind 
Ausgangspunkt von Thorsteinns Vortrag-Performance, in der er mit mehr 
als 700 Bildern einen Einblick in die Welt der von ihm hergestellten 
Objekte geben wird. Der Akt der Erschaffung physischer, greifbarer Dinge 
und das damit verbundene unmittelbare Erlebnis eines persoenlichen 
Wirkens spielen fuer den Kuenstler eine fundamentale Rolle und fuehren 
ihn zu der existentiellen Frage, wer wir eigentlich sind und welcher 
Bestimmung wir nachgehen. Sie steht im Mittelpunkt seines performativen 
Vortrags, der darauf zielt, in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Publikum einen 
imaginaeren Raum des Nachdenkens darueber zu kreieren, was er als 
'Physics of Human Life', die Physik menschlichen Lebens begreift. Ein 
architektonisches Experiment.
Einar Thorsteinn, geboren 1942 in Reykjavik, Island, lebt und arbeitet 
in Berlin. Der enge Freund des Visionaers Buckminster Fuller und 
ehemalige Student von Frei Otto gilt als ein Pionier experimenteller 
Architektur. Thorsteinn arbeitet seit langem gemeinsam mit Olafur 
Eliasson an verschiedenen Projekten weltweit und zeigte seine Werke in 
Einzel- als auch Gruppenausstellungen.

Betrachtet man die Entstehung zeitgenoessischer 
Kommunikationsstrukturen, stellt sich das ‘Chilenische Netzwerk 
Experiment’ als ein Spiel mit technischen Systemen und abstrakter Poetik 
dar. Die Beziehung zwischen diesen beiden Konzepten spiegelt sich wider 
im Arpanet, dem Vorgaenger des heutigen Internets, und dem waehrend der 
70-er Jahre in Chile entwickelten Cybersyn Projekt. Mit dem Arpanet wird 
die Verwicklung des U.S. Verteidigungsministeriums in 
technologisch-wissenschaftliche, auf Kontrolle ausgerichtete Systeme 
offensichtlich. Im Cybersyn erleben wir das Zusammentreffen von Kulturen 
und Systemen, welche ueber reine Technologien hinausgehen, um ethische, 
poetische und pluralistische Dimensionen einzubeziehen. Am 11. September 
1973 gerieten zwei diametral entgegengesetzte Netzwerk-Philosophien 
miteinander in Konflikt...

Der offene Charakter des Internets macht es nicht nur zum weltweit 
maechtigsten Werkzeug zur Erzeugung konspirativer Narrative, sondern 
befoerdert zugleich die Kreation der wohl groessten internationalen 
Plattform fuer die Entwicklung und Verbreitung politischer, 
militaerischer und unternehmerischer Propaganda. Jedes Individuum, jede 
Gruppe - ob mit offizieller Legitimation, im Verborgenen oder mit 
betruegerischen Absichten agierend - mit Zugang zum Netz kann mit jeder 
beliebigen realen oder fiktiven Aktion an die Oeffentlichkeit treten. In 
Zeiten einer Atmosphaere allgegenwaertigen Sicherheitsdenkens, einer 
Oekonomie der Angst und scheinbar staendig drohender terroristischer 
Attentate stellt sich die Frage nach der Rolle des Internets bei der 
Legitimitaet von derartigen gefuehlten Bedrohungen. Welche Gefahren 
entstehen fuer Kultur und Identitaet, wenn die Freiheit von Zugang und 
Kommunikation in Konflikt mit einem unscharf definierten, doch 
allgegenwaertigen und zu grossen Teilen online ausgefochtenen ‘war of 
terror’ geraet?

Wenn die Rede auf IP Adressen kommt, tut sich in Europa und anderswo ein 
Graben auf zwischen regulaerer Ordnung und der taeglichen Praxis von 
Millionen von Menschen. Waehrend neue Gesetze die formalen IP Rechte 
gestaerkt haben, hat sich die unauthorisierte Nutzung geschuetzter 
Inhalte weiter verbreitet. Unkontrolliertes Remixen, Veroeffentlichen 
und Teilen von Material ist in der digitalen Massenkultur eine gaengige 
Praxis. Bisherige Versuche, mit Hilfe von Gesetzen und/oder Technologie 
zu kontrollieren, was Leute mit digitalen Informationen anfangen, haben 
sich als ineffektiv erwiesen. Das Panel bringt Gesetzgeber auf 
nationaler und internationaler Ebene auf der einen, und 
Filesharing-Aktivisten einer freien Kultur auf der anderen Seite 
zusammen. Wir fragen danach, was passiert, wenn sich der Graben immer 
mehr verbreitert? Welche Strategien und Kosten sind noetig, ihn zu 
schliessen?

Auf den ersten Blick scheint es keinerlei Verbindung zwischen der 
mystischen Welt der Hexen und der Kabballah und den Hightech-Welten von 
Raumfahrtprogrammen und Daten-Trojanern zu geben. Aber sie alle mischen 
das Unerklaerliche mit Politik und Technologie und verwenden die 
Fiktionalisierung von Informationen, um narrative Dispositive zu 
schaffen, die ueber die herkoemmliche kulturelle Wahrnehmungspraxis 
hinausgehen. Die Erforschung des Alls konspiriert mit militaerischen 
Interessen, welche wiederum eine Vielzahl von Vorgaengen nach Art 
‘Trojanischer Pferde’ im Bereich der Medien, Software und 
Informationsuebermittlung entfesseln und in Bewegung setzen. Wo durch 
unsichtbare Mechanismen gesteuerte Ereignisse die Realitaet dominieren, 
resultieren unklare Deutungen, die Bereitschaft zum Glauben an 
Spekulationen und eine Verschleierung von Ursachen und Motiven. Besteht 
die Herausforderung darin, sich dem Unerklaerlichen nicht laenger ueber 
Theorien, sondern durch die unmittelbare Wahrnehmung anzunaehern?

Das Web 2.0 wurde als Paradies des freien Zugangs angekuendigt, als 
Nutzer-freundliche Community und Browser Plattform. Obwohl viele darin 
eine Verbesserung sehen - daher das Kuerzel 2.0 - ist diese Veraenderung 
in erster Linie eine Form von Abschottung des Internets, wo Nutzerdaten 
und kreatives Eigentum zu einer Art Handelsware geworden sind. Die wahre 
Rede- und Bewegungsfreiheit laufen Gefahr, sich immer mehr mit der Welt 
von Kommerz und Geschaeft zu vermischen. Dies befoerdert Spekulationen 
wie beispielsweise die, wer Rechte und Identitaeten der Netzuser 
kontrolliert.  Welche alternativen Modelle und Strategien sind denkbar, 
um in dieser quasi privaten Struktur einen oeffentlichen Bereich 
aufrecht zu erhalten und letztlich das Internet davor zu bewahren, zum 
Opfer seiner eigenen konspirativen Tendenzen zu werden?

1. Conference CONSPIRE....

Conspiracy is a human condition used to decipher the way in which we 
read an increasingly chaotic world of manipulated disinformation. The 
Internet and its associated Web 2.0 counterpart have begun to move 
beyond communal and user driven realms of information exchange towards 
mechanisms fuelling and fanning all forms of popular speculation. They 
are indicative of a loss of control and a growing sense of surrender to 
perceived hidden forces and secret societies where mythologies of world 
domination, corporate control and government induced fear fetishism 
emerge. Within this thematic spectrum this year’s conference finds its 
topics.

All keynotes and panels take place at the House of World Cultures 
(Auditorium). The conference of transmediale.08 is organised in 
cooperation with the Federal Agency for Civic Education.

The 'Real' Conspiracy

 From 'real' to simulation, from simulation to virtualisation, the 
assimilation of the reality function has haunted the continuing debates 
about images and intelligibility. This, of course, is predicated on the 
assumption that there is a stable, describable, 'real' that shares an 
objective affinity to the world. Shattered by psychoanalysis, quantum 
physics, semiotics, cybernetics, and, increasingly by computation, the 
fiction of the 'real' is the indispensable conspiracy. This talk will 
take aim at the 'reality principle' as the core tragedy of a culture 
inebriated by a desperate illusion.
Timothy Druckrey is an independent curator, critic and writer concerned 
with issues of photographic history, representation, and technology. He 
lectures internationally about the social impact of digital media and 
the transformation of representation and communication in interactive 
and networked environments.

The Paradox of the Big Bang: Reducing Fear by Accelerating Danger

Due to their ambivalent existence between physical paradox and mythical 
space black holes generate such an awesome fascination that they invite 
unrelenting speculation of every kind. On the eve of one of the most 
significant scientific experiments in history - the simulated creation 
of micro black holes in the depths of the ‘Large Hadron Collider’ in 
Geneva, Switzerland Prof. Rossler will raise a flag of caution on this 
speculation by pointing to his own research and evidence prevalent in 
the scientific community. The experiment, at a cost of nearly 10 billion 
euros, and which is opposed by 97 per cent of respondents in an 
international BBC survey is due to be carried out in May 2008. Prof. 
Rossler argues that if successful the experiment will promote the 
euphoria of techno-scientific power, but ultimately provoke the basic 
question ... what to do with the creation of a black hole on Earth? The 
game with the diffuse and perpetual fear intrinsic to scientific 
discourse may be no joke.

A reflective conversation between Maturana and Davila whose purpose is 
to show the basis of human origins as a biological cultural construct. 
They will speak about the origin of language and conversation to 
illustrate the type of worlds that are generated within our coexistence. 
A circulo reflexivo is a space constituted by people invited to reflect 
upon and converse, listen to each other, have opinions on a subject, in 
this case co-inspiration and collaboration as a conceptual biological 
phenomenon. What is most important in a reflective circle is what 
happens to the participants in this relational space when listening to 
each other. Central to such 'Reflective circles' are personal 
reflections about our sense of being, including the following questions: 
How do you understand yourself as a competitor? How do you understand 
yourself as a collaborator? How do you understand yourself as a 
co-inspirator?
Humberto Romesin Maturana was born in Santiago de Chile in 1928. He is a 
neurobiologist and philosopher. Together with Francisco J. Varela he is 
one of the initiators of radical constructivism and the inventor of the 
concept of Autopoiesis. Maturana lives in his birth town where he is in 
charge of the Instituto Matriztico together with Prof. Davila. His 
publications bear witness of his interdisciplinary work in the fields of 
biology, philosophy, psychology and social studies.

Alchemy Of Objects

The artist and experimental architect Einar Thorsteinn is inventing and 
producing since many years hundreds of different models of space, 
architecture and mathematical structures. This never-ending process of 
production and its power are the starting point of his performance 
lecture, where he will deliver an insight into the world of objects 
fabricated by himself projecting more than 700 images. The act of 
creating physical, tangible things and the therewith related experience 
of a personal activity and potency are playing a decisive role and lead 
to the existential question who we really are and what is our 
destination in life. This question takes a centre stage in his 
performative lecture which is aiming to create in collaboration with the 
audience an imaginary space of thinking about what he is calling the 
'Physics of Human Life'. An architectural experiment.
Einar Thorsteinn, born 1942 in Reykjavik, Island, lives and works in 
Berlin. A close friend of the visionary Buckminster Fuller and former 
student of Frei Otto’s he is considered a pioneer of experimental 
architecture. Since a long time Thorsteinn is working with Olafur 
Eliasson on projects throughout the world. He has had many solo as well 
as group shows.

Looking into the origin of contemporary communication structures the 
'Chilean Network Experiment' was a play between technical systems and 
abstract poetics. The relationship between these two concepts and their 
meeting reflects upon the characteristics and origin of the Arpanet, the 
Internet's predecessor, and the Cybersyn project developed in Chile 
during the 1970's. Within Arpanet we find the U.S Department of Defense 
engaged in a techno-scientific trajectory focused on systems and 
control. In Cybersyn we find a meeting of cultures and systems that 
surpass technology to include ethical, poetic and pluralistic 
dimensions. On September 11th, 1973 these two diametrically opposed 
network philosophies confronted each other ...

The Internet's 'open system' makes it not only the world's most powerful 
tool of conspiratorial narrative generation but also creates the 
broadest 'extra-national' platform for the creation and dissemination of 
political, military and corporate propaganda. Any group (or individual) 
whether legitimate, clandestine or fraudulent with access to the net may 
proclaim any act real or imagined. Within the current atmospheres of 
induced security, economies of fear and pending 'terrorist' action what

When it comes to IP, there is a widening gap, in Europe and elsewhere, 
between regulatory regimes and the everyday practices of millions of 
people. While recent legislation has strengthened formal IP rights, 
unauthorized use of protected content has sharply expanded. Uncontrolled 
remixing, editing and sharing of material are entrenched in digital mass 
culture. Attempts to control what people do with digital information, 
through law and/or technology, have so far proved ineffective. This 
panel will bring together both sides, legislators on a national and 
European level and activists for a free culture and file sharing. What 
happens if this gap continues to widen? And what are the strategies and 
costs for closing it?

At first glance there may seem to be no link between the mystical worlds 
of witches and medieval Kabballah with the hightech-realities of the 
space programme and data trojans. But - all of them mingle the 
unexplainable with politics and technology, and apply the 
fictionalisation of information to achieve narrative goals beyond the 
confines of their central practice. Space research conspires with 
military interests, which in turn unleash a multitude of events in the 
form of media, software and information Trojan Horses. Iconographies, a 
culture of the belief in speculation and an opacity of reason result 
where the unseen mechanisms behind an event take a dominant position 
over reality. Can we therefore challenge the inexplicable and 
rationalise the theory out of the perception of conspiracy?

Web 2.0 has been heralded as a paradise of open access and user-friendly 
community building by shifting software and web applications to a 
browser platform. Although many see this as a form of upgrade, hence the 
'2.0', in fact this shift has been primarily a form of 
compartmentalisation of the Internet where user data and creative 
property rights become a form of commodity. The true spirit of freedom 
of expression and movement are threatened to enter the realm of commerce 
and trade raising speculation as to who controls the rights, identities 
of the users therein. What are the alternative models and strategies 
keeping this intrinsically quasi-private structure a public domain, and 
ultimately prevent the Internet from becoming a victim of its own 
conspiratorial tendencies?
