ein videokonzert und eine tanzperformance operieren an den grenzen der
wahrnehmung - es geht um die schwelle zwischen leben und tod, traum und
bewusstsein. im ersten teil lassen sich die grenzbereiche erleben, in denen
sich bewusstsein und körper auflösen. im zweiten teil konfrontiert der tänzer
michael schumacher, langjähriges mitglied von forsythes ballett frankfurt, sich
mit der traumatischen übergangszeit zwischen tod und wiedergeburt. unter
verwendung von drahtlosen sensorennetzwerken am körper und im umfeld des
tänzers entsteht in 'schwelle II' ein raum, in dem licht, klang und objekte
ihre eigene choreographie haben und sich parallel zu schumacher
verhalten und neben ihm atmen: wo hört der körper auf, und wo beginnt der raum?
was passiert an der schwelle, an der körper und umwelt miteinander
verschmelzen, einander beeinflussen und verändern?
chris salter studierte wirtschaftswissenschaften und philosophie und promovierte
über theater und computermusik an der stanford university. er arbeitete unter
anderem mit peter sellars, william forsythe und dem ballett frankfurt zusammen
und ist mitbegründer des künstlerkollektivs 'sponge', das die schnittstellen
von kunst und forschung erkundet. salter ist professor für digitale medien an
der
concordia university in montreal.
'schwelle I' und 'schwelle II' ist eine ko-produktion diverser kultureller und
wissenschaftlicher institutionen. die künstler- und forscherinnen stammen aus
kanada, china, deutschland, holland und den usa. 'schwelle II' wurde teilweise
im sommer 2006 während einer projektresidenz bei  t e s l a  entwickelt, die
welturaufführung findet bei  t e s l a  zur transmediale statt.

a video concert and a dance performance that operate on the borders of awareness
- at the threshold (schwelle) between life and death, dream and consciousness. 
the first part explores the border zone in which consciousness and the body
disintegrate.  in the second part, the dancer michael schumacher, a long-time
member of forsythe's ballett frankfurt, confronts the traumatic transition
between death and rebirth.  using networks of cordless sensors on and around
the dancer's body, "schwelle II" creates a space in which light, sound, and
objects move to their own choreography.  they actions parallel schumacher's,
they breathe beside him: where does the body end and
the void begin?  what happens at the threshold where the body and its
environment merge, where they influence and change one another?
chris salter studied economics and philosophy and received his ph.d. in the
areas of theater and computer generated sound at stanford university.  he has
collaborated with, among others, peter sellars and william forsythe and the
ballett frankfurt.  he co-founded the art + research organisation "sponge",
whose works range between artistic production and scientific research. salter
is assistant professor of digital media at concordia university, montreal.
"schwelle I" and "schwelle II" are co-productions of various cultural and
scientific institutions.  the artists and researchers come from
canada, china, germany, holland, and the usa.  "schwelle II" was partially
developed during a project residence at  t e s l a  in the summer of 2006.  the
worldwide premiere will take place at  t e s l a  for transmediale.
