1. Partner Events

Zum Programm der transmediale.07 gehoert eine Reihe externer Veranstaltungen,
die in Kooperation mit den jeweiligen Institutionen entwickelt wurden und die
ausserhalb des Festivalzentrums in der Akademie der Kuenste am Hanseatenweg
praesentiert werden. Schon am Vortag der transmediale.07 erinnert eine Hommage
an den vor genau einem Jahr verstorbenen Nam June Paik. Bei Tesla ist unter
anderem Seiko Mikamis Neubearbeitung ihrer Installation ‘Desire of Codes’ zu
sehen, Chris Salter zeigt dort als Weltpremiere den zweiten Teil seiner
Performance-Reihe ‘Schwelle’. Eine Ausstellung in der Galerie Zero mit
KuenstlerInnen aus Polen und Slowenien gehoert ebenso zu den externen Projekten
des diesjaehrigen Festivals wie eine Ausstellung mit multimedialen
Originaldokumenten ueber den grossen Medientheoretiker des 20. Jahrhunderts,
Marshall McLuhan, in der Kanadischen Botschaft.

Nam June Paik, der Vater der Video-Kunst, starb am 29. Januar 2006. Der
gebuertige Koreaner studierte Musik in Deutschland Ende der 50er Jahre, bevor
er als Mitglied der Fluxus-Bewegung zum bildenden Kuenstler wurde. Obwohl er
1964 New York zu seinem Arbeits- und Lebenszentrum machte, blieb Deutschland
seine 'Kuenstlerische Heimat’. Die Akademie der Kuenste erinnert an ihr
prominentes Mitglied.

Eine einzigartige Sammlung von Film- und Audiomaterialien mit und ueber den
Medientheoretiker Marshall McLuhan und seine vieldiskutierten Theorien
praesentiert die kanadische Botschaft in einer Sonderaustellung zur
transmediale.07. Der Marshall McLuhan Salon - multimediales Informationszentrum
der Botschaft - zeigt in der interaktiven Ausstellung mittels innovativer
Technologien etwa 30 Videoclips, 15 Radioaufzeichnungen, interaktive CD-ROMs
und illustrierte Veroeffentlichungen. Besucher sind eingeladen, sich intensiv
mit dem Phaenomen McLuhan und der heutigen Neubewertung seiner Thesen
auseinander zu setzen.

Arthur Kroker, Leiter des Lehrstuhls fuer Technologie, Kultur und Theorie an der
University of Victoria und Keynote Speaker der transmediale.07, wird die
Ausstellung eroeffnen.

Der Marshall McLuhan Salon und die Ausstellung koennen auch nach dem Festival
noch besucht werden - Oeffnungszeiten: Montag bis Freitag 12 - 17 Uhr.

Chris Salters Medien- und Performanceprojekt ‘Schwelle’ setzt die neusten
Moeglichkeiten akustischer und interaktiver Technologien, um sich den
Extremzustaenden des Bewusstseins anzunaehern. In dem mehrteiligen Projekt
erzeugen hochaufloesende Videobilder und raeumliche Klangkomposition,
interaktive Installation und Live-Performance Bewusstseinszustaende in den
Zuschauern, welche die Schwelle zwischen Leben und Tod, Traum und Bewusstsein
erfahrbar machen. Tesla praesentiert zur transmediale.07 ‘Schwelle I’ und
‘Schwelle II’. Im ersten Teil lassen sich durch Bild und Ton die Grenzbereiche
erleben, in denen sich Bewusstsein und Koerper aufloesen. Im zweiten Teil
durchlebt der Taenzer Michael Schumacher, Meister der Improvisation und
langjaehriges Mitglied von Forsythes Ballett Frankfurt, die traumatische
Uebergangszeit zwischen Tod und Wiedergeburt. Unter Verwendung von drahtlosen
Sensorennetzwerken im Umfeld und am Koerper des Taenzers entsteht in ‘Schwelle
II’ ein Raum, in dem Licht, Klang und Objekte ihre eigene Choreographie haben.
‘Schwelle II’ wurde teilweise waehrend einer Projektresidenz bei Tesla im
Sommer 2006 entwickelt, die Welturauffuehrung findet im Rahmen der
transmediale.07 statt.

Seiko Mikami (jp) - Desire of Codes

In einer informationsorientierten Gesellschaft erfolgt die Kodierung
individueller Informationen fast so schnell wie die Erfuellung von Wuenschen.
Unsere Konsumgewohnheiten, unsere Vorstrafen, unsere chronischen Krankheiten,
bis hin zu unseren eigenen Abbildern, die von Ueberwachungskameras erfasst
werden - das alles ist in Form von Barcodes gespeichert, aehnlich der
physischen ID unserer DNA. In der interaktiven Installation folgt der Barcode
individuellen Wuenschen, sichtbar gemacht durch eine Gruppe sich bewegender, an
der Wand befestigter Skulpturen aus hautaehnlichem Silikon. Jede der Skulpturen
traegt einen gravierten Barcode und reagiert auf die Bewegungen des Publikums.
Auf diese Weise thematisiert das Werk die enge Beziehung zwischen menschlichen
und computerbasierten Koerpern. Seiko Mikami praesentiert die neu entwickelte
Fassung ihrer interaktiven Installation ‘Desire of Codes’.

Seit ihrer Erfindung beanspruchen Computer und andere elektronische Geraete
einen wichtigen Platz in unserer Phantasie. In einer Ausstellung der Galerie
Zero in Kooperation mit der transmediale.07 setzen sich junge Kuenstler mit der
Computerisierung der Welt auseinander.

Nika Oblak & Primoz Novak (si) - The Box

Das ausweglose Gefangensein in einem geschlossenen System wird von Nika Oblak
und Primoz Novak ironisch zum Ausdruck gebracht.

Dorota Walentynowicz (pl) - Dobrze - Well done / The Dance
Interaktive Video-Installation, 2006
Drei junge Frauen tanzen an der Grenze zwischen Zwang und freiwilliger
Unterwerfung. Ihre zweideutige Erfahrung spiegelt sich in der ihres ‘Dompteurs’
wieder.

Anna Krenz (pl/de) - Medi at cus
Zeichnungen, 2006
Die Moeglichkeit des koerperlichen Leidens haelt Menschen nicht davon ab, ihr
Glueck mit der Existenz der Maschinen zu verbinden. Die Zeichnungen der
Kuenstlerin reflektieren ueber die ungleiche Beziehung zwischen Menschen und
Computern.

Unterstuetzt durch das Polnische Institut Berlin und das Slowenische Ministerium
fuer Auswaertige Angelegenheiten.

6. videobar im babylon

Puenktlich zur transmediale.07 eroeffnet in Berlin ein neuer Ort: die videobar
im babylon. Mit den Reihen Masterpieces, Underground ganz oben, Filmsampling,
VJ Meditationen und 1000 Raeume startet die videobar im babylon den Versuch,
die Idee des ‘offenen Kinos’ weiter zu entwickeln, als eine Schnittstelle
zwischen experimentellem Film, Videokunst, Videoinstallation und
VJ-Performance.

Erstmals wird auch das komplette Film- und Videoprogramm der transmediale.07 im
Kino Babylon:Mitte zu sehen sein. Das Kino zaehlt zu den aeltesten noch aktiven
Kinos in Berlin. Im Jahr 1929 als 'Urauffuehrungskino' der Stummfilmzeit
eroeffnet, entwickelte sich das in einen von Architekt Hans Poelzig im Stile
der Neuen Sachlichkeit erbauten Wohn- und Geschaeftskomplex eingebettete Kino
zu einem Zentrum der Kultur- und Filmszene.

1. Partner Events

The transmediale.07 programme includes a series of external events which are the
result of cooperation between various partner institutions and which are being
presented outside the main festival venue of the Akademie der Kuenste on
Hanseatenweg. A day before the official festival opening a tribute is paid to
Nam June Paik who died exactly one year ago. Tesla exhibits a new version of
Seiko Mikami’s installation ‘Desire of Codes’, and presents the world premiere
of ‘Schwelle - Part II’, a performance by Chris Salter. An exhibition of Polish
and Slovenian artists at Galerie Zero forms part of this year's festival, as
well as an exhibition of multimedia documents about the great media theorist of
the 20th century, Marshall McLuhan, at the Canadian Embassy.

Nam June Paik, the pioneer of Video Art, died on January 29th, 2006. Born in
Korea he came to study music in Germany in the late fifties, before he engaged
in the Fluxus movement as a visual artist. Although he left for New York in
1964 Germany remained to be his 'artistic homeland'. The Akademie der Kuenste
commemorates its prominent member.

On the occasion of the transmediale.07 the Marshall McLuhan Salon - multimedia
information centre of the Canadian Embassy - features a unique collection of
film and audio material focusing on the Canadian media philosopher Marshall
McLuhan and his widely discussed theories. The interactive exhibition presents
about 30 different video clips, 15 radio recordings, interactive CD-ROMs und
illustrated publications by McLuhan on state-of-the-art technical devices.
Visitors are invited to deal intensively with the McLuhan phenomenon and the
re-evaluation of his assumptions.

Arthur Kroker, Research Chair in Technology, Culture and Theory at the
University of Victoria, and transmediale’s key note speaker, will inaugurate
the exhibition.

The Marshall McLuhan Salon and the exhibition about Marshall McLuhan can still

4. Tesla: Chris Salter & Seiko Mikami

Chris Salter’s ‘Schwelle’ is a new media and performance project using cutting
edge acoustic and interactive technologies to explore the extreme threshold
states of consciousness that constitute human experience. The multi-part
project uses High Definition image and multi-channel sound, interactive
installation and live performance to create states of consciousness in the
spectator akin to the thresholds states that one experiences at the edge of
trance, sleep and death. For transmediale.07, Tesla presents parts I and II.
Part I is a turbulent exploration told by way of image and sound of the
experience undergone at the time of the dissolution of the body and of
consciousness. Part II is a live performance in which the audience confronts a
lone single performer Michael Schumacher, master improviser and long time
dancer at Forsythe’s Frankfurt Ballet, experiencing the traumatic transition
period between death and rebirth. Utilising wireless sensor networks in the
room and on the dancer’s body, Part II creates a stage environment where light,
sound and objects take on their own choreography. Part II was partially
developed during a project residency at Tesla in summer 2006 and will receive
its world premiere at transmediale.07.

Seiko Mikami (jp) - Desire of Codes

In an information-oriented society, the encoding of individual information
occurs immediately, almost as fast as the satisfaction of a desire. Our
consumption habits, our criminal history, our chronic diseases, even our
photographs taken by a security camera - all are stored in barcodes,
assimilating them to the physical ID of the DNA. In this interactive
installation, the barcode following individual desire is made visible by a
group of moving sculptures fixed on the wall. The sculptures, made of human
skin-like silicone on which a barcode is carved, react to the audience
following its own movement, thus showing the strict connections between human
and computerised body. Developed at Tesla, Seiko Mikami presents a new version
of her interactive installation ‘Desire of Codes’.

Since they have been invented, computers and electronic devices occupy an
important place in our imagination. Young artists deal with the computerisation
of the world in this exhibition at Galerie Zero, organised in cooperation with
transmediale.07.

Nika Oblak & Primoz Novak (si) - The Box

Being caught in a closed system leads to desperation. Nika Oblak and Primoz
Novak bring this to expression in a particularly ironic way.

Dorota Walentynowicz (pl) - Dobrze - Well done / The Dance

Three girls dance at the border between enforcement and voluntary submission.
Their ambiguous experience is mirrored in that of their ‘trainer’.

Drawings, 2006
The possibility of physical pain does not stop human beings from tying their
happiness to the existence of machines. In her drawings, the artist reflects
upon the unequal relationships between computers and humans.

On schedule with transmediale, cinema Babylon:Mitte opens its ‘videobar im
babylon’. A series of film-samplings, VJ meditations and other activities will
be on show under the concept of an ‘Open Cinema’, an interface between
experimental film, video art, installation and VJ performance.

For the first time the complete film and video programme of transmediale.07 will
be screened at the cinema Babylon:Mitte. This cinema is one of the oldest still
operating cinemas in Berlin. Opened in 1929 as a premiere movie theatre for
silent films, the venue - embedded in a living and trade complex built by the
architect Hans Poelzig in the style of New Objectivity - developed into a
centre of the culture and film scene.
