Wie in den vergangenen Jahren bemuehen wir uns auch weiterhin, den Februar zu
einem Monat der Medienkunst in Berlin zu machen. Auch in diesem Jahr finden
wieder zahlreiche Veranstaltungen und Ausstellungen statt, die das
Festivalprogramm ergaenzen und erweitern.

RAW DATA betont den maschinellen Charakter eines modernen Buerogebaeudes und
laesst diese Maschine in Interaktion mit ihrer Umgebung treten. Datenspuren,
die Nutzer des Gebaeudes, das Gebaeude selbst und sein staedtisches Umfeld
hinterlassen werden ueber mehrere Visualisierungen zugaenglich. Mittels
medialer Datenarchitektur entsteht eine 'Oeffnung' des Gebaeudes, Passanten und
Besucher koennen sich durch einen kostenfreien Anruf beteiligen.

Die Installation von visomat inc. ist im Auftrag von SAP fuer die
Geschaeftstelle in Berlin-Mitte entstanden; RAW DATA ist das zweite
Medienkunstprojekt, das an dieser Fassade gezeigt wird. transmediale und SAP
haben bei der Auswahl und Entwicklung des Projektes eng zusammengearbeitet.

Das c-base reconstruction project (CPRP) erforscht seit 1995 die BASICS der
menschlichen Evolution in der in Berlin-Mitte gelegenen Raumstation c-base. In
den vergangenen zehn Jahren haben sich um die c-base herum
Gemeinschaftsstrukturen fuer unabhaengige kuenstlerische und lebenspraktische
Arbeitsweisen etabliert. Die C-BASICS Themenabende werden von Workshops,
Projektionen, Screenings und Soundsystems ergaenzt. Das komplette Programm:

Sven-Ola Tuecke praesentiert in Zusammenarbeit mit freifunk.net und commando
GmbH den Fernschreiber Typ Lo-15 von ca. 1940 als Linux-Terminal mit
mechanischem Frontend in einer WLAN-Umgebung.

Arbeiten von Kuenstlern, die die Computerkunst in Schweden eingefuehrt haben.
Die digitale Kunst wurde dreissig Jahre vor der so genannten digitalen
Revolution geboren. Ende der 1960er Jahre entwickelte sich in Schweden ein
neues Genre: die 'Computerkunst'. Die in der 'Nordic Pioneers' Ausstellung
vorgestellten Arbeiten spiegeln die Visionen der Kuenstler, aber auch die
technischen Bedingungen, unter denen sie arbeiteten.
Kuratiert von Gary Svensson, dem Autor des Buches 'Digitala Pionjaerer'.
Eine Kooperation von [DAM] Berlin, transmediale und Electrohype.
Mit Unterstuetzung der Schwedischen Botschaft.

hack.it.art dreht sich um technologischen, kuenstlerischen und politischen
Aktivismus in Italien. Untersucht wird ein weiter Komplex von Aktivitaeten, der
waehrend der 1980er Jahre entstanden ist und sich zu einem alternativen Netzwerk
gegenueber dem traditionellen Kunstsystem entwickelt hat. Diese Aktivitaeten
wurden nicht immer unter dem Begriff 'Kunst' gefuehrt, sondern oft als
'Praktiken' oder 'Aktivismus' bezeichnet.

We continually try to make February a month of media art in Berlin. Once again
this year there will be numerous events and exhibitions complementing and
expanding the festival programme.

2. RAW DATA
visomat inc.

RAW DATA displays the machine-like character of a modern office building and
allows this machine to interact with its environment. The installation plays
with traces left behind by users of the building, the installation, and the
urban surroundings, and makes this data accessible to the observer through
various visualisations. The media data architecture initiates an opening of the
building and a dissolving of the barrier between in-doors and outdoors. The
installation requires passers-by and visitors to read the data representations
and to interact with the building by means of a toll-free phone call.

The installation by visomat inc. was commissioned by SAP for the offices in
Berlin-Mitte; RAW DATA is the second media art project that will be shown on
this facade. transmediale and SAP worked closely together in the selection and
development of this project, so to offer media art in Berlin a platform for

Since 1995 the c-base reconstruction project (CPRP) is continuously exploring
the BASICS of human evolution at the renowned crashed space station underneath
Berlin-Mitte: the c-base. Besides this basic research, the last decade saw the
establishing of a variety of independent community practices and structures
accompanying the lives and artistic works of the c-base crew and their
associated partners. The C-BASICS theme nights will be supplemented by

The latest media installations from Thomas Koener, 'Banlieue du Vide'(2003),

minimalist manner with acoustic and visual perspectives that deal with traces in
urban spaces and landscapes.

Works by artists who introduced computer art in Sweden. Digital art was born
thirty years previous to the so called digital revolution. During the late
1960s a new genre called 'Computer Art' started to emerge and crystallise, both
in Sweden and internationally. The works presented in the 'Nordic Pioneers'
exhibition mirror the visions of the artists and the technical conditions they
were working under.
Curated by Gary Svensson, author of the book 'Digitala Pionjaerer'.
