1. Workshops

Autonome Solarroboter, sensible akustische Module in Nervous Networks,
Relaiscomputer aus dem Baumarkt, Live Coding als Performancetechnik,
Hyper-Audio-Learning und Audioarchivierung, AVID Videoschnitt - an fuenf
Nachmittagen des Festivals oeffnen Kuenstler und Entwickler ihre Werkstaetten,
praesentieren ihre Tools und Toys und geben dem Publikum die Moeglichkeit,
selber Hand anzulegen.

Die Workshops werden auf Englisch gehalten, wenn nicht anders angegeben.
Da die Anzahl der Teilnehmer sehr begrenzt ist, ist eine Voranmeldung per Email
erforderlich: workshops at transmediale.de

Alle Workshops finden im Haus der Kulturen der Welt im Raum K3 statt
(John-Foster-Dulles-Allee 10, 10557 Berlin). Teilnahme: 10 EUR, ermaessigt 8
EUR

2. Chirping And Crawling
Sensitive acoustic modules and primitive solar robots - Introduction into
Nervous Networks

Part 1
Living Particles 
Ralf Schreiber (de) 
Durch Solarzellen versorgte elektronische Schaltungen erzeugen leise, variable
Klaenge. Ohne elektronische Vorkenntnisse zu benoetigen, koennen die Teilnehmer
auf vorbereiteten Platinen autonome Solarroboter und Solarsoundmodule bauen.
Trotz der begrenzten Technik eroeffnen sich viele chaotische Soundmuster, die
die komplexen internen Spannungsverhaeltnisse der Schaltungen repraesentieren.
Die selbstgebauten Solarsoundmodule koennen von den Teilnehmern mit nach Hause
genommen werden.
Ralf Schreiber arbeitet in den Bereichen Audioinstallation, Robotik, chaotische
Prozesse, autoaktive Systeme und Stille.

Part 2
Solarrobots
Sebastian Noth, Christian Faubel (de) 
Im Workshop werden 'lebende' elektronische Organismen kreiert, die sich autonom
fortbewegen koennen. Faubel und Noth (derstrudel) geben eine Einfuehrung in
Schwingungs-Schaltungen zur Bewegungskontrolle. Aus wenigen elektronischen
Bauteilen, Kabeln und verloeteten Eisenteilen bauen die Teilnehmer kleine
Roboter, die sie nach der Veranstaltung zu Hause krabbeln lassen koennen.
Christian Faubel arbeitet als Forschungsmitglied der Roboterabteilung am
Institut fuer Neuroinformatik in Bochum. Sebastian Noth studiert Bioinformatik
an der Martin-Luther-Universitaet in Halle. Derzeit arbeitet er als
Programmierer am Bochumer Institut fuer Neuroinformatik sowie am Institut des
Hautes Etudes Scientifiques in Paris. http://derstrudel.org

3. Tales From The Core

Aus einfachsten Baumarkt-Materialien wie Schrauben, Holz und Draht entstehen
Relais, die zu funktionierenden Addierern verschaltet werden. Diese Relais
werden zu Maschinen zusammengesetzt, die blinken, laermen und harmlose
Elektroschocks verteilen koennen. Alle entstandenen Geraete werden dann zu
einem logischen Panoptikum verdrahtet, das in einer abschliessenden
Praesentation vorgefuehrt wird. Technisches Vorwissen ist nicht noetig - eine
Prise handwerkliches Geschick schadet allerdings nicht.

4. Livecoding

Im Rahmen der Reihe Live Cinema, die transmediale und club transmediale
gemeinsam veranstalteten, organisiert die transmediale Workshops zu
verschiedenen livecoding Systemen. 'Livecode' ist eine Software, die
Programmieraktivitaet selbst in die Programmablaeufe integriert. Kurz: Der
Programmierer kann die Spielregeln des Programms aendern, waehrend der Computer
es ausfuehrt. Teilnehmer mit und ohne Vorwissen sind willkommen.

Livecoding 1 – ChucK 14-16.30 Uhr

ChucK heisst eine neue Computermusik-Programmiersprache, die 'on-the-fly', d.h.
waehrend der Ausfuehrung des Programms, geschrieben werden kann. Der Workshop

TOPLAP - 'Temporary Organisation for the Promotion of Live Algorithm
Programming' - ist ein Kollektiv aus Musikern und VJs, die sich mit livecoding

Der Workshop stellt beispielhaft ein livecoding System vor, das auf
unterschiedliche Weise zur musikalischen Improvisation mit Code benutzt werden
kann. Der Workshop zeigt, wie Programme waehrend der Ausfuehrung geschrieben
und veraendert werden koennen, und wie man Programmprozesse einbindet, die sich
verschiedene Teilnehmer in einem Netzwerk teilen.

5. HAL

h-a-l steht fuer Hyper-Audio-Learning und vereinigt verschiedene Techniken des
Streaming im Internet mit der abgestuften Indexierung, Praesentation und
Vernetzung von originalen Audiomitschnitten (Vorlesungen, Radiofeatures,
Interviews, etc.). Der Workshop gibt eine Einfuehrung in die Systemarchitektur
und beschaeftigt sich anhand konkreter Beispiele mit den Anforderungen an eine
zeitgenoessische Audioarchivierung. Wie kann sich der Wissensraum der
Netz-Zukunft mehrsprachig darstellen? Werden Communities wie 'Link Everything
Online' oder 'Wikipedia' die tragenden Saeulen sein – oder Verlage und
Universitaeten? Und wenn der Nationalstaat des 20. Jahrhunderts die
Schulbuecher sponserte - welche Inhalte sind zukuenftig auf der Basis von
europaeischen Steuergeldern online bereitzustellen und zu pflegen?
h-a-l wird z.Zt. parallel zu dem interdisziplinaeren Forschungsprojekt
SeriousPop entwickelt. Auf der Website www.seriouspop.com entsteht bis 2007 ein
mehrsprachiges Webarchiv. Es praesentiert und erforscht die verschiedenenartigen
und reichhaltigen Szenen von Punk, Rock und Pop in Osteuropa seit den 1960er
Jahren. Damit treten auch die verschiedenen Verhaeltnisse in den Blick, die
zwischen Pop und Politik in West- und Osteuropa vorkamen – und mittlerweile
eine gemeinsame Zukunft vor sich haben.

Andreas Leo Findeisen (de/at) - Universitaetslehrer, Autor, Musiker und
Netzwerker. Seit 2002 wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter am Ordinariat fuer
Kulturphilosophie und Medientheorie, Akademie der bildenden Kuenste Wien, seit
1996 Mitarbeiter des deutschen Philosophen und Schriftstellers Peter
Sloterdijk. Erforscht und experimentiert mit grenzueberschreitenden Formen der
Zusammenarbeit in Kunst, Architektur, Medien und Wissenschaft zwischen West-

Georg 'gogo' Bernhard arbeitet als Senior Developer bei dem auf Python, Zope und
Plone spezialisierten Software-Entwickler bluedynamics (at). Teilnahme an
zahlreichen internationalen Workshops und Sprints zu Zope, Plone und
E-Learning. Neben zahlreichen Werken im Bereich der Softwarekunst arbeitet
'gogo' v.a. an konzeptioneller elektronischer Musik. Verantwortlich fuer die

6. AVID Videoschnitt

Avid praesentiert mit der neuen Avid Xpress DV Software ein tragbares und
guenstiges, aber professionelles digitales Videostudio. Die Software wurde
speziell fuer DV Cutter mit hohen Anspruechen entwickelt und bildet eine sehr
gute Moeglichkeit, sich mit professionellen Schnittgeraeten vertraut zu machen.
Im Workshop kann man die ersten Schritte und Anwendungen ausprobieren.

1. Workshops

Primitive solar robots, sensible acoustic modules in Nervous Networks, relay
computers from your local tool store, live coding as performance art,
hyper-audio learning und audio archiving, AVID video editing – over a period of
five afternoons during transmediale.05 artists and developers unseal their
laboratories, present their tools and toys and pass their knowledge on to the
participants.

All workshops will be held in English, unless indicated otherwise.
Due to a very restricted number of available seats an advance reservation is

2. Chirping And Crawling
Sensitive acoustic modules and primitive solar robots - Introduction into
Nervous Networks

Part 1
LIVING PARTICLES

Electronic circuits, which are supplied by solar cells, generate soft, quiet and
variable sounds. The participants can build their own solar sound modules or
their own solarbot. Electronic know-how is not required. In spite of the simple
techniques, many chaotic sounds emerge, which reveal the complex internal
tensions which the wires represent. At the end of the workshop, the self-built
solar sound modules can be taken home by the participants.
Ralf Schreiber works with autonomic audio installations, robotics, chaotic
processes, auto-active systems and silence.

Solarrobots

A hands-on workshop in building 'life-like' electromechanical artefacts that can
walk. Faubel und Noth (derstrudel) introduce basic concepts of oscillating
networks for movement control. Learn how to create your own robot out of a
handful of electronic parts, wires and a soldering iron. Everybody goes home
with a crawling robot!
Christian Faubel works as a research fellow in the robotics group at the
Institut fuer Neuroinformatik in Bochum, Germany. Sebastian Noth studies
bioinformatics at the Martin-Luther-Universitaet in Halle and currently works
as a programmer at the Institut fuer Neuroinformatik, Bochum, and at the

3. Tales From The Core

Out of the simplest components from the do-it-yourself store (screws, wood,
wires, etc.) relays are built and can be converted into functioning adding
calculators. From these relays, machines are constructed which flash, make
noises and which can generate harmless electrical shocks. All finished devices
will be wired logically into a panopticon and finally presented. Previous
technical knowledge is not required; however some ability for handy-work
doesn't hurt.

4. Livecoding

In the context of a series of programmes titled 'Live Cinema', which is
organised corporately by transmediale and club transmediale, the festival
offers workshops concentrating on various livecoding systems. 'Livecode' is
software that includes programming activity itself while the programme
operates, meaning a programmer can change the rules while they are being
carried out by the computer. All levels of experience are welcome.

ChucK is a new computer music language that is strongly-timed, concurrent, and

The workshop will introduce a referential system for livecoding that can be used
to create various topologies for musical improvisation with code. We will show
how to write programs while they run and how to use references to processes
that are shared between participants. While some changes affect one part of the
system, they do so differently dependent on the local context of each.

5. HAL

h-a-l stands for hyper-audio-learning and combines various internet streaming
techniques with the gradual indexing, presentation, and hyper linking of
original audio documents. The workshop provides an introduction to the system
and, with the aid of concrete examples, deals with the requirements of
contemporary audio archiving. How can the knowledge-space of a future network
present itself multilingually? Will communities such as 'Link Everything
Online' or 'Wikipedia' become the central backbone of these developments, or
will it be publishers and universities? After nation-sponsored schoolbooks in
the 20th century, what will be the issues and contents provided online and
funded by EU tax money in the future? 
h-a-l is currently being developed simultaneously to the interdisciplinary
research project SeriousPop. By 2007, www.seriouspop.com will be featuring a
multilingual web-archive project. Its aim is the presentation of and research
into Eastern Europe's multi-faceted Punk, Rock and Pop scenes since the
1960ies. Thus, the different relations between Pop and Politics in Eastern and
Western Europe become visible as both sides begin to face the task of a shared
future.

since 2002, teaching as assistant at the Chair for Cultural Philosophy and
Media Theory, Academy of Fine Arts Vienna; has been working with the German
philosopher and writer Peter Sloterdijk since 1996. Engaged in research and
experiments about cross-border networking in the fields of art, architecture,
media and science between Western and Eastern Europe.
